Dr. Leonard B. Glick Obituary
NEW SALEM- Dr. Leonard Glick of New Salem passed away peacefully at home on January 9th with his family at his side, shortly after turning 94.
He leaves behind his wife, Nansi, of over 64 years; his children Benjamin, Noah, Marian, and Jesse; five grandchildren; and his sister Gail.
Early in his life, after earning an MD, Dr. Glick was drafted into the Air Force as a Medical Officer. While serving in Memphis, TN, in 1955, he performed the physical and psychological exam for a young but already famous Elvis Presley, whom he described as being quiet and polite.
Shortly thereafter, he left medicine to become an anthropologist. To conclude his doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania, in 1960-1962 he and his wife spent 18 months in the Highlands of New Guinea doing anthropological research. He taught for one year at Bryn Mawr College and then joined the anthropology department at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he taught for 7 years before the growing family moved to New Salem.
In 1972, Dr. Glick became Professor and Dean at Hampshire College in Amherst in the School of Social Sciences, two years after the college's inception in 1970. He taught there for 30 years, specializing in anthropology and the history of the Jews of Europe before the Holocaust. He published two books: the first, Abraham's Heirs, focused on the history and culture of Jews in Western Europe during the Middle Ages and their relationships with their Christian neighbors. The second, Marked in Your Flesh, is a history of circumcision from ancient times, when it was a sacrificial wound, to its present practice in America.
Dr. Glick aided his local community by serving as a judge at Mahar's annual Science Fair in the Behavioral Health category. He was an active supporter and member of the board for the Mount Grace Land Conservation Trust for a number of years, and for many years he conducted a Friday Night study group for the Jewish community of Orange, Athol and Gardner where they read and discussed Jewish literature of all kinds. He was an active member and popular lecturer for attendees at adult educational events at the National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst. And he strongly supported Intact America, a national organization dedicated to ending infant circumcision in America.
The family is conducting prayers at a brief private funeral service. In the spring a graveside memorial service will be held at the North New Salem cemetery.
Please, no flowers. If you wish to make a donation in Leonard Glick's memory, he asked that you choose an organization dedicated to feeding hungry children; his family suggests contributing to the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts.

I have only, just now, learned this sad news; (I left the Pioneer Valley some years ago, eventually settling near my children and grands on the West Coast.) I had the pleasure of getting to know Dr. Glick during the seven years I was employed by Valley Transporter. He never failed to not only be one of my more fascinating passengers, but a truly engaged listener -- such a rarity, it seems! I was fascinated by his ability to see what so many do not: the need to fully face the divisive topic of circumcision. His support of activism in this area, and his true compassion and understanding, were rare attributes, indeed. I send my sincerest condolences to his family; he was a dear soul.

Len Glick was not only my advisor for both my Div 2 and 3 but also a mentor in life. I will remember his stories forever, the introduction of ?Malinowski's term 'imponderabilia' to denote the initial impressions of an unusual or bizarre custom that eventually becomes as familiar and unnoticed as your bedroom wall. I will remember and treasure his gentle guidance and admonishments when I was conducting my own anthropological field research I took some risks that only a VERY naïve 20 something year old would do. I was shocked at his disapproval of the risk but simultaneously he cushioned his admonishment in congratulations for my acquisition of great research material and his true relief upon hearing that nothing happened to me. He was fatherly and so kind as well as absolutely brilliant. I invited him to my wedding on 7/4/1998- in the 'sheep field' and reception at the red barn at Hampshire college afterwards. It was such an honor that he came. He will live on within the hearts and minds of so many of us and has left a lasting passion in many to keep questioning and curious about 'the other' and maintain an awareness of our bias and judgement. He will be missed by the world and my most profound condolences go to Nansi, Benjamin, Noah, Marian, Jesse, Gail and the 5 grandkids.

Prof. Glick was my Division II and Division III advisor at Hampshire College. He was one of the most intellectually rigorous educators I have ever met: challenging, pushing, yet with a huge heart and utter compassion, a combination that helped generations of young people believe in their abilities. Those days under his tutelage expanded my world beyond anything I ever imagined, prepared me for doctoral studies and research, and provided me with the essential tools for understanding the world. My deepest condolences are coupled with lifelong gratitude to have learned under Professor Glick.

When I read Len's book "Marked in Your Flesh", I was quite surprised and deeply honored to find my name in the Preface. When I asked Len what I had done to earn a mention, he said that I had taught him the importance of "persistence". I must assume that was his polite way of saying that I am a "stubborn old man". Whatever his reason(s) for including me, I am still absolutely thrilled that Len thought to mention my name. Len is a true hero to many people! I will miss his wisdom, compassion, and dedication (persistence??) to advocate for Human Rights.
