Mr. Macatee was truly the best and most memorable teacher I ever had. What the others have already said, I can only second. I never got hit with an eraser but I witnessed the energy, the enthusiasm and the side stories with rapt attention and will always cherish those classes and the extracurricular activities where ever he was involved.
Fondly, Sarah Field

Bud Macatee ("Mr. Macatee" to most of us) was a mountain of knowledge, inspiration and leadership. Early on, he gave many of us the "kick in the butt" we needed; later, he gave us pure joy and inspiration in ways that went beyond schooling. He was my favorite teacher, no one else was even close, and I think many of my classmates would agree. What other teacher would show you how to repel down a cliff (with a big surprise at the bottom I won´t get into here)? These hands-on lessons were taught by a man who parachuted into forest fires. The trips to Mazatlan were magical. Sixty years later, I still can´t believe we were allowed to take those trips. Here, in my office I am surrounded by books of history, geography and political science - and who do I have to blame? Bud Macatee, of course. He was a walking encyclopedia of ancient history and the geography of the Middle East. What a great man! He lived a wonderful life and I am honored to have been even a tiny part of his life.

Bud was definitely one-of-a-kind teacher. No other teacher anywhere had Bud's unique ability to elicit such curiosity and wonder from his students, or as Buz said, hit his target with a flying eraser. His Socratic style was brilliant and got young kids engaged in critical thinking. He truly cared about us. Outside class, he was of course also very dynamic, and as Mil said, he inspired adventure in us. What a cool guy! We were very lucky to have him in our lives, and we learned immensely from him. Bud was a gem. I was fortunate to stay in touch, spend a day with him in La Jolla about 10 years ago (he was totally together) and reach him the night of our 50th reunion (Class of '68) on my cellphone so that he could chat with Glenn Steiner and a group of the "Baja/Mexico Boys". He was a superb teacher and a good friend.
Yes, as Peter suggested earlier today, he did not tolerate foolish behavior or ignoring homework assignments. But if you put in the work, he was very much committed to helping you learn history and "think" on your own. Eternally grateful that he taught at LJCDS while I was there and mourn his departure. RIP Bud

Everyone I know who had Bud "Mr. Macatee" for a teacher and/or a coach thought the world of him. So many good memories of him from 6th or 7th grade (can´t recall now that I´m 80) thru senior year (`64) from the classroom where he brooked no foolin to the playin fields or courts where he showed us how to play hard but clean & fairly. In the class room he was all business. He lived by the code currently captured by "FAFO". None of the other great teachers could match his lightning fast reactions to any transgressions as chalk and erasers found their mark with maximum stinging power. His Mexico spring break trips were legendary. Thank you Mr. Macatee, gone but never forgotten. RIP!!

No one could throw an eraser or a piece of chalk as well as Bud. He was in a class by himself. Who remembers ubi o ubi est mayo sub ubi.

Bud was one of those memorable teachers and humans who opened new worlds to his students and made us want to learn more. He took us on camping trips to Baja and held philosophy discussions in the evening. His adventurous spirit infected us all. A life well lived, with big impact.

I really enjoyed weekend visits at Bud's place. We had a lot of laughs, and good times at the Captain Cook Club.
We were both teachers, and altar boys.
One of Bud's rowdy students dropped a bench on Bud's foot, on purpose. On/by reflex, Bud decked him.
As the Headmaster was about to fire him, the parent, Navy brass, said, "If you fire Bud, I'll pull all my kids out of this (private/costly) school! My son deserved it!"
Rest in Peace, Bud.

Bud Macatee led a long and colorful life. He lived through the Great Depression, the Korean War, jumping out of airplanes, teaching teenagers, decades of cold Alaskan winters and several marriages. I am lucky to have been able to call him a good friend. RIP Bud. Jim
