COLEBROOK – Leonard D. Martel, 83, of Colebrook, died at the Country Village Healthcare Center in Lancaster on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, after a recent period of declining health.
He was born in Errol on April 30, 1942, a son to the late Camille and Ida (Jordan) Martel. He attended school until the 7th grade in Errol and his family then moved to Colebrook. Leonard was a 1961 graduate of Colebrook Academy. A short time after high school, Leonard enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served honorably for 4 years. He worked as a mechanic on B-52 bombers and was stationed in Bangor, Maine.
Upon his return home following his military service, Lenny married Arlene Neary, and they raised their family in Colebrook. He worked for many years as a plumber, for Carrier Plumbing & Heating, Daniel Hebert Plumbing & Heating, was a self-employed plumber for 10 years with his own business, L.Martel Plumbing & Heating, and later as plant engineer at the Coös County Nursing Hospital and House of Corrections, from which he retired. He was also served on the Colebrook Fire Department for 20 years.
Lenny loved to be outdoors, whether it be hunting and fishing, ice-fishing, snowmobiling or maple sugaring in the late winter. His favorite places were his camp in Dixville and later Lake Umbagog, and being at home, with family time being very important. He was most happy when talking and being with his family
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Arlene (Neary) Martel of Colebrook; two sons, Paul (Patricia) Martel of Jefferson, and Mark (Tracy) Martel of Fairlee, Vt.; a brother, Linwood Martel of Williston, Vt.; four grandchildren, Todd (Collette) Martel, Troy (Dawn) Martel, Noah Martel and Isaac Martel; and a great-granddaughter, Tegan Martel.
Leonard is pre-deceased by a brother, Camille Martel, and a sister, Minnie Egan.
There are no public calling hours. A graveside service with military honors will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at 10 a.m. in the Colebrook Village Cemetery.
Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mr. Martel may be made to the Colebrook Fire Department, P.O. Box 273, Colebrook, NH 03576.
