Leonard Clyde Randall, son of Clyde Randall and Lila Temple Grout Randall died peacefully in his home on March 16, 2016 with his family by his side.

Leonard was born on February 21, 1924 in Ike Robertson's house in Newfane, VT. He was the third of 3 children. They lived there until he was five when his father was electrocuted. From there the family moved to an apartment at McCall's. They lived there until Leonard was 8. Then they moved to the Walker house which was above the old Williamsville Store, then on to Julian's house.

He went to Timson Hill Elementary School until 8th grade. He was in charge of keeping the school warm in the winter by building fires. Len bought his first gun a Winchester 32 Special with the money he made from building fires. He then attended Brattleboro High School and graduated in 1942. He would ride in the rumble seat of a '29 Chevy every day to school. Len was on the baseball team as a third basemen. His coach nicknamed him Hawkeye. He also played for the football team and played his first night game in VT. After high school he joined the Marines 4th division. He was stationed in Adnut Point, New River and Maui. He was a survivor of WWII, on the islands of Saipan and Iwo Jima. On Saipan he volunteered for a difficult mission and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was with the Marines for almost 4 years.

Len met Mary Saint Pierre and she moved down from St. Albans. On February 5, 1951 he married Mary. They bought John Clarks house in Williamsville in 1952 where they remained for the rest of their years. Len and Mary were together for 63 good years.

He worked for Templeton's for a year building furniture, then went on to work with his brother, Frank Grout logging. Len purchased a logging truck and trucked logs for 14 years. From there he went to Smead's Lumber and worked there for 25 years before retiring (Somewhat). After retirement Leonard worked at the American Legion in Brattleboro.

He enjoyed hunting, bowling, sugaring and woodworking in his free time. He was a member of the American Legion, Marine Corps League and the VFW.

Len is predeceased by his wife, Mary Randall of 63 years; a brother, Frank and wife Fran Grout; a sister, Florence Powers and her husband Walter; and a son-in-law, Lee Severance.

He is survived by four children, Rosalee Martocci and husband Paul, Bud Randall and wife Denise, Francaise Randall and Patricia Reardon, and Mona Severance; five grandchildren, Matthew, Paul Jr., Zeb, Josh and his wife Beth and Nicole; three great grandchildren, Alisha, Paul and Cody .

Leonard was a true gentleman Vermonter and "they don't make 'em like him anymore." He joined the Marines at age 17 during WWII, and served his country as a combat engineer in four major campaigns: Roi-Namur, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. I met him late in his life, but found he had grown up knowing my grandparents, and had even played baseball with my grandfather for the Williamsville team in the old West River Valley League. I am very sorry for his loss, glad to have had him as a friend and admire his amazing work ethic and unselfish service to his country. I apologize for entering these words so long after his passing, but I only found out about his death today.

I am so sorry for your loss, Leonard and my dad (Frank Johnson) were friends when they worked together at Smeads Lumber. The last time that Dad saw Leonard was when Dad was a pt at Grace Cottage about five years ago. Leonard stopped in to visit. That was the highlight of Dad's day. Dad passed a few months later.. My thoughts are with you all. It is a difficult time. I hope that as time passes, you will be able to remember Leonard with smiles and not sadness. Peace be with you all.

Leonard was a wonderful cousin and high school classmate of mine. His service in the Marines during WWII and Korea (though I did not know about his service in Korea at the time) made me proud as I was of all my cousins and brothers who served our country in those difficult times. I too served in the Navy during both wars. Leonard was a devoted husband to Mary and father to his children. I shall miss his letters and our infrequent meetings. Rest in peace.

Richard & I extend our deepest sympathy. He was one of the greatest generation. Many times, we would celebrate our wedding anniversaries together.

My thoughts and prayers are with each of the children of Uncle Leonard. I am the daughter of George "Bob" Temple, Anita Warren. I enjoyed reading a letter he wrote only a few weeks before he passed on. I would love to get a copy of the obituary for my Dad.
