LeRoy Barton Sr. Obituary

LeRoy Barton, Sr., was born December 6, 1932, in Rayville, LA to Willie Mae Wasson Barton and Frank Barton. "Rra" as he was affectionately called by his friends was loved dearly. On Thursday, November 2, 2023, the Lord called him home from labor to reward. He was a graduate of Rayville High School class of 1952 and graduated from Southern University where he received a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1956. He went on to get a Master of Science in Horticulture in 1965. While at Southern University he was initiated into the Beta Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. in 1954. He then became a charter member of Delta Tau Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. where he served as the first President of the chapter. He retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1985 and joined the Peace Corps where he taught in Botswana from 1986-1989, and taught agriculture and science in Lesotho from 1989-1993. During this time, he was able to live out one of his passions and travel the world. In 1993, he settled in Las Vegas, NV where he worked at Nevada Energy for a while until he retired for the second time. Always a consummate learner, he took classes for fun at University of Nevada Las Vegas and served as a mentor to the International Students. He served as the President of the Southern Nevada Peace Corps Association and in 2002 was a Franklin H. Williams award recipient. The award recognizes "outstanding ethnically diverse" people who have served as Peace Corps Volunteers. He continued to volunteer with the International Student Association and take classes at UNLV until he moved back to Louisiana in 2013. He leaves to celebrate his legacy to his children Roy Barton Jr. of Atlanta, GA, Chenita Daughtry (Sean) of Boston, MA, and Karen Moore (Troy) of Huntsville, AL. His legacy will be shared by 5 grandchildren, Kiera Daughtry, Saul Daughtry, Mariah Moore, Makayla Moore and Troy Moore, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Rra is preceded in death by his parents Willie Mae and Frank Barton, a sister Ernestine Barton, a brother Osbourne Barton, and other relatives and friends.
