Leroy “David” Dunbar, III went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 26, 2026 after a long battle with Alzheimers. He has been welcomed home by his parents, Leroy David Dunbar, Jr. and Sara F. Dunbar, as well as his beloved wife of 44 years, Olinda M. Dunbar, and his brother James “Jimson” Dunbar.
Born on September 25, 1937, David was raised in Spartanburg. As a teenager, he enjoyed creating chemical mixtures and experiments which lead his parents to build him a workshop out back for safety. David graduated from Spartanburg High School and attended Clemson College (now Clemson University) before enlisting in the Air Force Reserve at Donaldson Air Force Base in Greenville. David worked at Dunbar and Ellis Furniture while also running a newspaper route for Spartanburg Herald Journal. He then moved on to being a top salesman for Electrolux Vacuums. His last job was driving for Atchison Transportation Services, driving travelers to and from the airport.
David was sergeant at arms of the Rotary Club of Spartanburg, joining as soon as he was old enough. He also participated in construction of the Lake Bowen Dam and the slalom course. David never met a stranger. He was the favorite neighborhood dad, taking everyone and anyone to the lake to learn to ski, play ball in the yard, or ride bikes on the “bump bump trail” or even unicycle around the neighborhood.
David said goodbye to his daughter, Lindy D. Kerr (Chadwick Kerr); son, Leroy David Dunbar IV (Melissa Dunbar); sister, Fayssoux McLean (ET McLean); brother, Russel Reed Dunbar (Mackie Dunbar); and grandchildren, Charley Fayssoux Kerr, Lincoln Thomas Kerr, Leroy David Dunbar V, and Joseph Keen Dunbar.
The family would like to thank Katie Dennis and Alecia Pearson for his end-of-life care and being devoted friends of the family.
Visitation will be 3:30-5:30 PM on Friday, April 3, 2026 in J. M. Dunbar Funeral Home & Crematory, 690 Southport Road, Roebuck, SC 29376.

We take comfort in knowing that David is now with Jesus Christ, skiing across still waters.
