Leroy "Roy" W. Philbrook, 90, of Thomaston, passed away peacefully at the Sussman House in Rockport on April 10, 2025. Born on February 18, 1935, in Stoneham, MA, Roy was the son of Ivan A. and Naida H. (Ainsworth) Philbrook. A 1954 graduate of Rockland High School, Roy went on to explore his passion for the sea at Maine Maritime Academy before transferring to the University of Southern Maine, where he took teaching courses and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree.
A proud veteran, Roy served in the Navy from 1957 to 1961, rising to the rank of 2nd officer on tankers for Mobil Oil. His life's work was deeply tied to the sea, where he lobstered alongside his father from a young age before establishing his own career. However, his most fulfilling role came as a teacher of math, science, and industrial arts in St. George, Maine, from 1968 to 1994. He found immense joy in nurturing young minds, leaving a lasting impression on countless students. Beyond teaching, he also worked as a ranger at Camden Hills State Park, and truly enjoyed his time there.
Roy enjoyed boatbuilding, even having his own boatyard, Philbrook Boatyard. He was an active member of the Thomaston Baptist Church, where he participated in various activities that strengthened the community. Roy dedicated over 20 years to the Boy Scouts, earning the Silver Beaver Award in recognition of his commitment to youth and leadership training in the Pine Tree Council.
Roy was predeceased by his first wife of 47 years, Louise Jones, as well as his parents and his brother, David Philbrook.
He is survived by his devoted wife Maxine, who stood by his side during his illness, his sister Sandra Louise Dickinson, his daughter Karyn Mackenzie, his son Leroy E. Philbrook and his wife Renee, his beloved grandchildren, Riley, Evan, and Ryan Philbrook, many nieces and nephews, and many close friends including Morris Berry, Ted Mlynarski, Lou Caron, and Joe Chase.
A funeral service for Roy will be held at 11 AM on Friday, April 18, 2025, at the Thomaston Baptist Church, 212 Main Street in Thomaston, with a reception following the service. Roy will then be laid to rest during a committal ceremony at 2 PM at the Village Cemetery in Thomaston.
