I'm deeply saddened by Lew's untimely passing. We were mates from K through 12, including Landing School and Glen Cove Middle and High Schools. It was great seeing him and re-experiencing his sense of humor a couple of reunions ago, and first learning about his achievements in journalism. But what I particularly remember, and for the longest time, is the friendly argument we enjoyed in our Landing School days over which spelling of Louis/Lewis was "dominant". (Example: Mine was shared by several kings of France; his was emblazoned on a heating oil company's tanker trucks.) My deepest sympathies to Diane and the family.

I thank you for writing your condolences, memories, etc. of Lew. He was a dear brother, sorely missed, loved his sense of humor and I enjoy getting to know him even more through all of your writings. I thank you. I love him and miss him. Please keep on writing.

I knew Lew through my husband, Tommy, who has been dear friends with Lew since their Kindergarten days. They remained close through all the years. I often talked to Lew on the phone, because it seemed that he would always call when Tommy wasn't home! We will miss those calls from Lew which were always filled with laughter. Tommy is absolutely crushed. We send our heartfelt sympathy and much love to Diane, Carol and Sara

I remember Lew when he sat behind me in Ms. Quilty's senior English class at GCHS. Before class began, I'd always turn around and ask him to do his William F. Buckley impersonation. He nailed it every time. Incredibly funny! Lew was a good guy and very smart. I always admired him. I extend my sincere condolences to his family. Paul Tuthill

Diane,
We are so far away at the moment but our hearts are right next door. I remember when we first met Lew...such a small world when we discovered we knew some of the same people for years. We will sorely miss Lew's quirky sense of humor and his love for the natural world, especially turtles! Our deepest condolences.

The news of Lew's passing has saddened me. I have great memories of times spent with him and Bernie Horan back in GCHS. We were both in Miss Andreasen's Journalism class – those were some wonderful years. . He was a good and loyal friend. I also admired him for not letting other people do his thinking for him. Diane and family, please accept my deepest condolences.

I'm saddened to hear of the loss of Lew, whom I remember with enormous fondness from the days when he was my colleague at the Cincinnati Post. He was a fine writer and reporter -- one of the best columnists the Post ever had -- and a kind and gentle human being with a droll and delightful sense of humor. I can still remember his little smile, all these years since I last saw him. My condolences to his family -- you, and all who knew Lew, have lost someone who was truly special.

Dear Diane, Sarah and Carol
So very sad to hear about Lew. We also went to school together from Landing through GCHS. Also with great memories of OB and B. Also of going to Shea and pestering Dodgers for autographs. Lew had to be one of the funniest men I've ever known. I still use some of his lines. Although of late we were infrequently in touch it was good to know he was out there wisecracking. I will miss sending him the New Year's Day birthday wishes and his funny responses. Please know you are in my thoughtsand prayers.

Diane, Sarah, & Carol,
We are heartbroken to hear of Lew's passing. We were classmates from Landing School through Glen Cove High School. When Lew came home each summer from college, I had the pleasure of driving him around, since he had yet to get his drivers license. After a night of carousing with our friends, we always had to take a drive though "OB&B" (Oyster Bay and Bayville), no matter what the hour. I always obliged. The next time I'm in Glen Cove, I will take a little trip though OB&B for Lew and say a prayer for him. We will miss him a lot. Take care of yourselves.
