Lillie Crater Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Griffin-Culpepper Funeral Service - McGehee on Jan. 8, 2026.
Lillie Woods Crater was born in Arkansas City, Arkansas, to Dorothy Green Woods and Frank Woods on April 11, 1945. She was blessed with a happy childhood fishing and helping her father, Frank, who was a carpenter in the town. She attended grade school making straight A's, to the delight of all the teachers who taught her. She continued to make straight A's in high school, becoming valedictorian. She left Arkansas City, Arkansas, after she graduated high school in 1963 and went on to attend AM&N College in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, in 1964. AM&N College is known currently as the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (U.A.P.B.), where she graduated with a degree in art, studying under great artist John Howard. She helped many people in her life. She came from a long line of helpers. Her great aunt, Lillie Ford, helped a woman get to Chicago who had a child, John Jonson, who would eventually grow up to create Ebony/Jet Magazine. She graduated AM&N with full honors and was Valedictorian in 1968. In 1964, while she was attending college, she met Emanuel Crater and later married him in 1965. Emanuel Crater worked as a plumber at AM&N, and Lillie Crater worked a series of odd jobs while earning a computer degree at Pine Votech in Little Rock, Arkansas. She achieved all this while successfully raising a son she gave birth to on July 5, 1978, she named Anton Crater.
