Lionel Johnson Obituary
Lionel dedicated 30 years to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, retiring with a legacy of commitment and integrity. Above all, he was a devoted son and servant of God, finding joy in serving his church and extending a helping hand to anyone in need. He cherished moments spent with his family, creating memories that will endure for generations.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lionel Johnson Sr. and Nancy Johnson; his sister, Christie Johnson; and his beloved wife of 46 years, Carol Johnson.
Lionel is survived by his children: Scott Johnson (Jamie) of Palestine, Texas; Lora Miller (Richard) of Bullard, Texas; and Ramona January (Keith) of Bullard, Texas. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Krista Vogt of Clute, Texas; Christopher Buckley of Whitehouse, Texas; Magan Miller of Angleton, Texas; Kyle Miller of Pearland, Texas; Ashleigh Miller of Kilgore, Texas; Tyler Johnson of Palestine, Texas; Brock January of Bullard, Texas; and Shelby January of Bullard, Texas; as well as several great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings: Linda Walson of Palestine, Texas; Don Johnson (Lucinda) of Round Rock, Texas; Rosemary Taylor of Palestine, Texas; and Sandra Thompson (Junior) of Oakwood, Texas.
Lionel will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his profound love, generosity, and faith. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to his cherished church or a charity supporting those in need.
A visitation will be held on Monday, January 19th 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home, 3434 South Loop 256, Palestine, TX 75801. Funeral Services are scheduled on Tuesday, January 20th 2026, at 1:00 PM at Southside Baptist Church,1500 Crockett Rd., Palestine, TX 75801. Burial will follow at Land of Memory Cemetery.

I worked with Lionel for many years at the Texas Department of Corrections. He was a dedicated loyal employee and truly enjoyed his job.
He always looked for the positive in any situation and treated everyone with respect that he came in contact with.
I was fortunate to visit with him several weeks ago and was sadden to hear of his passing.
