Lionel Linney Obituary

Published by Legacy from Oct. 1 to Oct. 6, 2025.
Lionel "Poochie" Linney, beloved husband, brother, uncle, proud veteran, and loyal friend, peacefully departed this life on September 24, 2025, surrounded by love and care. Lionel was born on February 10, 1940, to the late Kathryn Linney Smith and Theophilus "Taffie" Jordan in Portsmouth, Virginia. He was the first of six children and was predeceased by his faithful wife, Dorothy J. Linney, sister Angela Smith, and brother, Robert Smith. He was a graduate of Our Lady of Victory Catholic School, Portsmouth, Virginia.
Lionel married the love of his life, Dorothy (Perry) Linney, December 1964, beginning a journey of love and partnership that spanned more than six decades. Together, they built a beautiful life in New York, where they were proud residents for over 60 years. Dorothy passed away in December 2023, and now the two are reunited in eternal rest.
A proud member of the United States Air Force, Poochie served his country with honor. After his service, he began a remarkable 36-year career with United Parcel Service (UPS), where his hard work, loyalty, and leadership left a lasting legacy.
During his time at UPS, he met Fitz Charles. They became close friends and formed a special bond. Fitz was a dedicated, committed and reliable caregiver. He lovingly stood by Poochie's side; he was like a "son" to him.
Poochie found joy in life's simple pleasures. He cheered passionately for his favorite sports teams- especially as a diehard Boston Celtics fan-he was their number one supporter through wins and losses. He also loved savoring a Nathan's hot dog at Coney Island, eating blue crabs, and visiting family; moments that brought him endless happiness. He leaves behind a legacy of love, mentorship, and devotion.
Poochie is survived by siblings Valarie R. Smith, Charles Michael Smith, and Kathy Michelle King; cherished and devoted niece, Ronita Lamb, goddaughter Tamar Charles (New York), forever friends Larry & Marilyn Jarrett, Sam Daye, Brenda Graham and host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Poochie's life was a testament to unwavering love, loyalty, and faith. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who were blessed to know him.
