Lisbeth Anne McVicar Stewart
May 2, 1944 - August 29, 2025
Charlotte, North Carolina - Lisbeth Anne McVicar Stewart passed away peacefully on Friday, August 29, 2025, in Charlotte, NC. She was 81 years old.
Libby was born to Anne Lister McVicar and S. Harrison McVicar, Jr. on May 2, 1944, at Lawrence Hospital, Bronxville, New York. Libby was the eldest of five girls. Through the years, The McVicars lived in Bronxville, Columbus, Ohio, Huntington, New York, Danbury, Connecticut, and then back to Bronxville in 1960, where Libby graduated from Bronxville High School in 1962.
Libby attended Parsons School of Design in Manhattan for a year after high school, and then worked for F. Schumacher & Co. Designer Fabrics, before traveling to Europe on the Steamship S.S. United States with fond high school friends for a trip of a lifetime. In October of 1964, she married William H. (Bill) Stewart, who happened to be "the boy next door" on Vine Street in Bronxville.
Libby and Bill lived at 64 Sagamore Road in Bronxville for a year before moving to Charlotte, NC. They raised three sons together, John Andrew (Drew), H. William (Chip) Jr., and Matthew Spencer.
While Bill worked in the fire insurance inspection field, Libby was a stay-at-home mother, who worked part time at various artful jobs, was involved with many different volunteer roles, including the Junior League of Charlotte, and was an active member at Myers Park Presbyterian Church. She was a beloved babysitter to many children, beginning with her cherished granddaughter, Stephanie Stewart.
After her sons were grown, Libby continued her higher education in the art field at UNC Charlotte and Central Piedmont Community College, where she pursued her passion for sculpture in many forms. To say she found her niche at this stage of her life is an understatement. Joy abounded as she tackled challenging projects which were based on her personal visions and dreams.
An avid gardener and lover of all things natural and growing, she found happiness in creating gardens with all her favorite varieties of both perennials and annuals. Libby never passed by a piece of driftwood at the beach, a dried magnolia leaf, or a grapevine waiting to be weaved into a wreath. She created masterpieces out of collected dried flowers, leaves, twigs, and overlooked treasures. She was an absolute font of knowledge of the natural world. Sharing favorite plants with her four sisters netted North Carolina natives thriving in their New York, Connecticut, and Vermont gardens.
Libby is survived by her son, Drew and his wife, Lou Anne; her daughter-in-law, Susan Hartman Stewart; her granddaughters, Lindsey May (Travis), Leslie Jones (Kyle) and Stephanie and great- grandchild, Noah Jones. Also surviving are her sisters, Barbara McVicar, Jody Ferguson, and Dianne Orlando. She was predeceased by her husband, Bill; sons, Spencer, Chip, and her sister, Jean Mendelsohn.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at Myers Park Presbyterian Church, 2501 Oxford Place, Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. The service will be livestreamed through the church website at:
