LOWVILLE- Llewellyn P. Zehr, 95, formerly of Lowville, passed away on
Saturday June 8, 2024 at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown.
He is survived by six children, John E. Zehr of Henderson, NY; Dennis E. Zehr of
Lowville, NY; Wendell E. and Maureen Zehr of Chaumont, NY; James E. and
Deborah Zehr of Bancroft, Nebraska; Ronald P. and Karen Zehr of Adams, NY;
Darlene and Stephen Rexford of Adams, NY; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-
grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; his siblings, Michael and Lois Zehr of
Goshen, Indiana; Helen Zehr of Lowville; Joseph and Genny Zehr of St. Cloud,
FL; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his beloved wife
Clara on May 7, 2006; and his special friend Verna Roggie; and a brother John
Zehr in April 1988.
Llewellyn was born on April 25, 1929 in Darien Township, NY, eldest of the late
Abner and Mary Nina Widrick Zehr. He attended a one room schoolhouse in
Martinsburg until the 5 th grade, moving to Woodville, where he attended country
school until the 7 th grade. He then attended Belleville Central School until grade
11. On January 5, 1950, he married Clara Marie Moser at Croghan Mennonite
Church with Rev. Lloyd Boshart officiating. Together with his wife, owned and
operated a farm on Lyng Road in Ellisburg from 1953-1978, moving to Adams
Center until 1986, when the couple moved to Lowville. He worked farming and
doing carpentry work before going to work for Widrick's and Sons in Lowville in
June 1986 until his retirement on November 21, 1992. For many years after his
retirement, he and his wife Clara traveled and volunteered for Mennonite Disaster
Service, spending time in Homestead, Florida, Georgia, Alabama and aided people
during the recovery effort after Hurricane Andrew. Llewellyn's final disaster, he
served as Supervisor in Conklin, NY. He served as chairman of the NY Unit of
MDS for about 81/2 years. In 1997, he went to work for Brookside Senior Living
Community in maintenance for two years. Llewellyn was custodian for Lowville
Mennonite Church from 1999-2007. He enjoyed working in the woods and
carpentry work. Llewellyn also found joy in taking a daily walk.
Calling hours will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday June 13, 2024 at
First Mennonite Church, New Bremen. A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. on
Friday June 14, 2024 at the Church. Private burial in Croghan Mennonite
Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family. Contributions may be made in
Llewellyn's memory to Mennonite Disaster Service New York Unit, P.O. Box 546,
Lowville, NY 13367 or First Mennonite Church of New Bremen, P.O. Box 417,
Lowville, NY 13367. Arrangements are with Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc.,
Lowville.
