Lloyd Wettstein Obituary

Lloyd Raymond Wettstein passed away peacefully on March 8, 2026, surrounded by family. He was born September 7, 1938, in the Town of Stockbridge, was the son of the late Hugo and Ottilia (Meyer) Wettstein. He attended Quinney, St. Mary’s, and Jericho schools and graduated from Chilton High School in 1956. During high school he worked at the Chilton and New Holstein canning companies. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army, and later served with the Wisconsin 84th Division Army Reserve.

On May 12, 1962, Lloyd married the love of his life, Beverly Jean Stumpf (Lawrence and Arvella Stumpf) at St. John’s Church in Menasha. He worked as a truck driver for Don Schaefer Trucking and later as a heavy equipment operator for Hedrich Construction. Lloyd spent 36 years with Wisconsin Public Service in the natural gas department. After retiring, he taught part-time for more than 12 years at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay in the Gas and Backhoe Training programs.

A dedicated community member, Lloyd served St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Kloten as a lector, usher, council member, and chairman of renovation projects. He received the Chilton Optimist Club Outstanding Service Award for work on the Community River Walk. He was active in softball well into his 70s, a fishing club member, veterans volunteer, and Little League Coach for his children and grandchildren.

Lloyd and his wife were longtime Green Bay Packer season ticket holders, and lifetime members of the Packer Hall of Fame Builders Club. They loved to travel, visiting Norway, northeast US, Canada, and lighthouse destinations across the Midwest. Attending and supporting their children’s and grandchildren’s events and activities led them through much of their lives together. Supporting local veteran’s organizations was very important to him, including the American Legion Post 258, and the Fox Valley Veterans Council in Appleton.

Lloyd remained very active throughout his final years. He enjoyed yoga, walking, and biking around his neighborhood. He enjoyed bird watching on his patio and especially loved his purple martins.  He loved weekly card games of sheepshead and poker with his veteran buddies, meeting monthly with his high school classmates, and spending precious time with family. He remained a loyal generous and quick-witted guy until the very end. A favorite pastime of his was cracking hickory nuts through the winter months and gifting them to friends and strangers alike brought him joy and purpose.

Lloyd is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Beverly; brother, Gerald; sisters, Donna and Peggy; and sister-in-law, Sandy. He is survived by his children, Jeff (Lisa), Brian (Jeff), Chris (Christie), Eric, and Amy (Greg Kroncke); "Australian son", Wayne (Debbie) Writley; grandchildren, Jordan, Zachary, Eli, Hanna, Alex, Grace, and Nicole; granddogs, Addie, Larry, Ayln, Loki, and Toby; his sister, Barb (Rick); and brother, Neil.

A special thank you to Amber and all the staff at St. Elizabeth Hospital for their expert and compassion care for Lloyd and his family.

A funeral service will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at 5:00pm, at Wichmann Funeral Home, 537 N. Superior Street, Appleton, WI 54911. Friends and family may gather at the funeral home from 3:00pm until the service begins.
