Lois Helmke Purdy, a beacon of kindness and selflessness, passed away on October 28, 2025, in Greenville, S.C., at the age of 85. Born on March 1, 1940, in McDonough, N.Y., Lois's life was a tapestry of dedication to her family, her community, and the countless lives she touched with her spirited nature.
Lois's journey began alongside her childhood friend and future husband, David Purdy, in the small town where they both grew up. Their love story was one for the ages, culminating in a marriage that spanned 63 years, filled with shared laughter and mutual support. "A regular golfer, she was occasionally seen with a trophy in her hands," David says.
A devoted mother to Michelle Jensen (Paul) and Jennifer Hart (John), Lois instilled in her children the values of education and service. She cherished the role of grandmother to Isabelle, Keira, Alana, Colton, and Adrianna. Lois is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Brown, and her brother, Richard Helmke (Beverly). She was predeceased by her loving parents, Anna and Walter Helmke.
Lois's academic achievements were marked by her earning a Bachelor of Science Cum Laude from SUNY Brockport. Her professional life included four years of teaching, followed by a year in Civilian Personnel at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. She devoted her life to creating a warm and welcoming environment for her family and all who entered her home.
Her commitment to helping others was evident through her extensive volunteer work. Lois dedicated 15 years to a domestic violence women's shelter, providing solace and support to those in need. She also empowered disadvantaged women through fundraising events for college scholarships and teaching literacy to adults, changing lives one student at a time.
Lois's interests were as varied as they were heartfelt. An avid gardener, she found peace and joy in the beauty of nature. Her love for traveling took her to places far and wide, enriching her life with diverse experiences. Each Christmas, Lois continued the cherished tradition of making Stollen from an old family recipe, a testament to her connection to her heritage and her love for bringing family together. Her melodious voice was not only a delight to those who heard her sing, but also a reflection of the harmony she spread in the world.
Described as kind and spirited, Lois's legacy is one of unwavering generosity and love. Her life was a living example of the impact one person can make through selfless acts and a commitment to the well-being of others. Lois Helmke Purdy will be deeply missed, but her spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her. Her light, though no longer present in this world, will forever shine in the hearts of her family, friends, and the many lives she touched.
