Adventurous, Independent, Loving,
Lois H Ruth (Holstein) passed away Wednesday Augusta 10, 2022, age 98. Loving mother of Jack. Jr (Carrie), Gari (Darlene), David (Sue), and Mark (Barbara). She was loving grandmother to Rebecca, Naomi, Christopher, Meagan, Rachel, Anna, and John, many great-grand children, and aunt to 14 nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by sister Jean (Knapp), brother Donald Holstein, and her parents Edward and Isabel (Upham) Holstein. She was an aunt to 14 nieces and nephews. Her marriage in 1949 would produce four sons. She said, "Being the mother of those four boys brought me the greatest joy"
She taught school for nearly Twenty-five years, in Detroit and Hawaii. Twenty of those at Chrysler Elementary School in Detroit. She lead by example, fostered a love for knowledge and adventure, in an atmosphere of mutual respect. She was a crossword puzzle master and a geography genius. It was a rare occurrence that she missed an episode of "Jeopardy". A huge Detroit Tigers fan, she lived and died with every win and every loss.
Upon graduating from Denby High School, Lois enrolled in Wayne University, Earning a BA in Education in 1945. In 1947 she embarked on a two year adventure teaching in Hawaii. Her experiences there provided life long memories and stories. In 1985 she returned to Wayne and earned an Masters Degree before retiring in 1987.
She loved to travel. During summer vacation, and after retirement, she visited nearly thirty countries, and most of the fifty states. Her travelling companions often included her sister Jean or cousin Thelma Ullrich. Among her fondest memories were the camping trips she "endured" with her family. Former Cub Scout Den Mother and Girl Scout leader, she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority, and The Wolverine Hunt and Fish Club.
Longtime resident of Grosse Pointe Park, she lived the last ten years close to family in Toledo, Ohio.
At her ninety-eighth birthday in May, when asked, she said the secret to 98 is "Live a good life, be good to people, make them happy, don't order them around when they're young, and have fun.
