It is with deep love and sorrow that we announce the passing of Lois Joan Schulz (née Hunsicker), who departed this life peacefully on May 30, 2025, at the age of 91, surrounded by her loving family.
Lois was the center of her family: its heart, its compass, and its greatest source of strength. A devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother (aka Mee-maw or Mims), Nurse, and woman of unwavering Catholic faith, she lived a life of grace and service. She was married to her beloved husband, Leonard "Len" Schulz, for seventy and a half years-a remarkable bond built on deep love and lifelong commitment. Family at the center of everything in their lives.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Lois graduated from Hallahan Catholic School and went on to attend nursing school at Hahnemann University, where she earned her Registered Nurse (RN) degree. She went on to dedicate over 30 years of her life to nursing at Rolling Hill Hospital in Elkins Park, PA where she treated countless patients with a pragmatic approach and a loving heart. In her early fifties, she returned to college and earned a Bachelor of Science in Health Care Administration from the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science (now part of Drexel University), reflecting her passion for learning and serving others. Lois and her husband Leonard moved to St Petersburg Florida in 1984 where they resided until 2024 when it was flooded by Hurricane Helene. She was a devoted nurse for St Anthony's Hospital and worked as a home health care nurse until she retired in her early seventies. Lois was a parishioner of St Raphael's Catholic Church for over 40 years. After Lois retired, she spent her time volunteering at the Christmas Toyshop Project and helping at events at her grandchildren's schools or activities. She was also a member of the Happy Hookers Rug Hooking Club and made countless rugs for friends and family. She won awards for her rugs in local fairs She also volunteered at the local hospitals and knitted countless baby hats for newborn babies at St Anthony's and Bayfront Hospitals. Her gift as a craftswoman – her artistic touch, a symbol of her patience, love, and creativity.
Lois loved her family fearlessly and devoted her entire life to their care and happiness. She was a loyal friend, offering wisdom, comfort, and laughter with an unwavering presence. She embraced modern connections and was known to stay connected with loved ones through social media well into her later years. She enjoyed sharing family news and funny memes with her friends and family.
Lois is survived by husband Leonard (husband of 70 years) and her four children: Donna Schulz, Susan Carruthers, Robert Schulz, and Lois Woods (husband Tony of 30 years)
She was a proud grandmother (aka Mee-maw or Mims) to six: Casey Carruthers; Corey Carruthers (wife Celia); Alexis Schulz Fuller (husband Grant) and their sons/great grandchildren Brooks and Cohen; Spencer Schulz; Lauren Woods; and Katharine Woods. Her love for her family was boundless and unconditional. She was also the only sister of the late Marie Muller (née Hunsicker), with whom she shared a lifelong bond.
Lois's legacy is one of faith, family, and enduring devotion. She was the center of her family's world, and her spirit will continue to guide and inspire them for generations to come.
A Memorial Mass will be on June 28th at 10am at St Raphaels Catholic Church 1376 Snell Isle Blvd NE St Petersburg, FL 33704. Family and friends are invited to attend and celebrate her remarkable life. An open house will follow at the Woods Home in Old Northeast St Pete.
The family would like to offer a special, heartfelt, and eternal thank you to Jackie Rindle, Lois's devoted and loving caregiver. Jackie's kindness and compassion brought care comfort, and unconditional love and commitment to Lois and Leonard. The family's deepest gratitude also goes to her only son, Robert Schulz, who opened his home to Lois and Leonard where they have resided since the devastation of their home by the flooding from Hurricane Helene in 2024.
