Lonney Howard Sangl peacefully passed away on Thursday, November 6, 2025.
Lonney was born on November 9, 1940 to Frank and Marjorie (Brott) Sangl in Spirit Lake, Iowa but remained in the hospital due to the Armistice Day Blizzard. He was raised on the generational Sangl farm in Jackson County Minnesota.
He graduated from Sioux Valley School in 1958 as class president of the class of 12. He played football in high school plus helped farmers in the area.
His career started as a meat cutter at the Lakefield Minnesota grocery store. He was then offered a job with John Morrell in Sioux Falls from a representative that he accepted and moved to Sioux Falls. He was a meat salesman for John Morrell for 41 years. He also worked for Red Owl in Spirit Lake at the meat counter and Swanson Grocery in Spencer part-time.
He met his wife, Karen (McClurg) and they married on July 10, 1965 in Montgomery Iowa. They lived in Sioux Falls but traveled back to the Spirit Lake area on weekends to be with family plus Lonney enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brothers and friends. He also worked on his carpentry skills. His skills with woodworking gave many family members the benefit of his labor with furniture, roofing, remodeling his homes and helping his son build his house.
Lonney and Karen welcomed their daughter, Julie (Wurr) and son Keith in 1966 and 1968. They went camping and all things outdoors as a family. In 1988 Lonney and Karen purchased and remodeled their dream home at Okoboji where they settled in. There they created so many wonderful memories with their grandsons Adam Wurr and Mitch Sangl. Their grandfather was always an essential part of their lives and they were to him.
He always enjoyed it when family, friends and neighbors would stop by and visit with him on their deck with the lake in his view. Lonney will be remembered for his kindness, giving nature, the love of family and all things outdoors.
Lonney is survived by his wife, Karen; daughter Julie (Bill) Wurr, son Keith (Vicki Lupkes) Sangl; grandsons Adam (Sarah) Wurr and Mitchell (Taryn) Sangl; great-grandchildren Samuel and Abigail Wurr; brothers Jim Sangl and Dave (Jackie) Sangl; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, cousins and friends who are like family.
