Lonnie Leo Hartman

Lonnie Hartman, 83, of Mitchell, formerly of Alexandria, SD, died Thursday, February 5, 2026, at Avera St. Benedict Hospital in Parkston. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Monday, February 9, at St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Burial will be at Green Hill Cemetery in Alexandria. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-4:00 PM at the church with a 3:30 PM prayer service.

Lonnie Leo Hartman was born June 20, 1942, to Rueben and Mabel (Behr) Hartman in Worthington, MN. He grew up in Alexandria, SD and farmed northeast of town all his life. Lonnie enjoyed making different farm tools/equipment and helping other farmers or a neighbor fix their equipment. He had a strong skill set in welding.

Lonnie was united in marriage on September 4, 1960, to Sheryl Hewitt in Mitchell, and together they raised their family of five children in Alexandria. Upon retiring from farming in 2014, Lonnie and Sheryl moved to Mitchell in 2023. In retirement, Lonnie enjoyed daily coffee at Marlin's and visiting with other guys and retired farmers. Most important to Lonnie were his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Lonnie is survived by his wife, Sheryl; son, Rod Hartman (Meshelle Jasso) of Alexandria; daughters, Lynelle (Rick) Knoll of Avon, SD, Vickie (Richard) Mitchell of Blunt, SD, Cindy (Kevin) Ishmael of Yankton, and Glenda Hartman of Okoboji, IA; and 18 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren; sister, Velma (Gary) Cortright of Worthington, MN; sister-in-law, Marlene Covin of Ethan; brothers-in-law, Dave Hewitt of Brookings and Lewis Wingert of Sioux Falls; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rueben and Mabel; a sibling in infancy; two sisters, Marion Taylor and Irene (Ray) Goodwill; brother-in-law, Robert (Bun) Colvin; grandparents; sister-in-law, Barbara Wingert.
