Loren Ray Orme, of Hutto, Texas, passed away on Friday, May 2, 2025, at the age of 85. He was born on July 26, 1939, to Aubrey Desmond Orme and Zelma Lois Hobbs.
Loren graduated from McCallum High School, Class of 1958, where he met the love of his life, Betty Green, Class of 1959. They married in June 1959 and shared nearly 66 wonderful years together, building a life rooted in love, family, and community. He was a devoted husband, father, and PawPaw and will be deeply missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his great-granddaughter Olivia Monzingo-Greenwood, his son-in-law Alan Monzingo, and his brother-in-law Bob Green. Loren is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Betty; his son Steve Orme (Jennifer); his daughter Dr. Denise Monzingo; his brother Winfred K. Orme (Judy); his sister Valerie Endreson (Harlan); and his sister-in-law Dionne Green.
He also leaves behind six grandchildren: Erik Orme, Megan Monzingo (Otis), Morgan Snow (Ian), Madison Monzingo, Mason Monzingo, and Jayme Ward (Taylor); and three great-grandchildren: Ava Monzingo-Greenwood, Eli Monzingo-Greenwood, and Ryan Ward. Loren is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Loren was elected Mayor of Pflugerville in 1972 and played a key role in establishing the Deutschenfest, a tradition that still thrives today with the continued support of the Pfluger family.
From an early age, Loren knew he was called to serve in law enforcement. After requesting an interview with T.O. Lang, Sheriff of Travis County, he was hired on the spot, becoming the youngest Deputy Sheriff in the county. He rose through the ranks to become Chief Deputy. After Sheriff Lang's term ended, Loren joined the Capitol Police, where he advanced to the rank of Captain. While working alongside the Secret Service at the Capitol, he was privileged to attend the Secret Service School in Washington, D.C. Loren completed his career with the Department of Public Safety, retiring as a Lieutenant after 38 years of dedicated service in law enforcement.
In retirement, Loren and Betty enjoyed traveling throughout Italy, Spain, France, and the Caribbean. Later, they purchased a motorhome and explored much of the United States, forming lasting friendships through the Ben Hur Travel Club. During this time, Loren also discovered a talent for oil painting and created many beautiful Texas Hill Country landscapes.
Loren was a proud 60-year Mason and a current member of Solomon Lodge #484 in Taylor, Texas. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite and a 60-year member of the Ben Hur Shrine. He served as Marshal of the Provost Guard Unit in 1995 and was on the Ben Hur Divan. He was elected Potentate of Ben Hur Temple and President of the Texas Shrine Association in 2000. He was Wagon Master of the Ben Hur Travel Club in 2005 and again in 2013.
He was a faithful member of Hutto Discovery United Methodist Church. Loren and Betty also served on the Board of Directors for the Hutto Food Pantry, now the Hutto Resource Center, where they volunteered for many years. Loren was passionate about ensuring no one in the community went hungry if he could help it.
