Loretta Dyson Obituary

Loretta was born on February 18, 1925 at Saint Francis Hospital, Hartford, CT, to William Gregory Marks and Elizabeth (Murphy) Marks, and died peacefully on July 24, 2023 at Saint Mary Home in West Hartford, CT. A proud scholar, constant reader, classical music lover and NY Times crossword puzzle solver (in pen), she attended Mount Saint Joseph Academy in West Hartford, where she was Class President and Valedictorian. She graduated in the class of 1946 from Saint Joseph College in West Hartford, where she received a BA in French, and was one of three graduating students to receive highest honors. She went on to earn a Master of Education/Counseling from the University of Hartford in the class of 1971, and she was named a Distinguished Alumna by Saint Joseph College and also by the University of Hartford (recognized jointly with her son, David Dyson, a first for this distinction). She married Raymond Dyson, Jr., in Hartford, CT, in 1948. They lived in West Hartford until 1968 when they moved to Rocky Hill, CT to continue raising their six children. Loretta was known for her cheerful, always positive disposition.

As a guidance counselor and Latin teacher at South Catholic High School in Hartford, Loretta helped students find their right path in life for over twenty years, and she has many former students who fondly remember Mrs. Dyson and the difference she made in their lives. After retirement, in honor of her late son, Bill, she remained active doing volunteer work through the 1990s and 2000s, into her late 80s, for people with HIV/AIDS through Tabor House (founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph), Mercy House, and AIDS Project Hartford. The annual Tabor GIANT Tag Sale that she helped organize and run for 23 years raised over $250,000. Providentially, the 2011 Tabor Tag Sale was the nexus for her friend, fellow volunteer, and 7:30am mass attendee, Rick, becoming her daughter Laura's kidney donor. A woman of deep faith, Loretta valued her service as a Lay Associate of the Sisters of Mercy, particularly her ministry planning social outings for women with AIDS and their children. She was a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox (as her beloved cat Fenway would attest) and was proud to be named a Community MVP by the New England Patriots for her impactful volunteer work.

Loretta was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, Raymond Dyson, and her son, William "Bill" Dyson and his partner Jim Smith, both of London. She is survived by five children: Raymond Dyson (Brenda) of Old Saybrook, CT; Elaine Pandolfe (William) of Billerica, MA; Joyce Lipkin (David) of Pittsburgh, PA; David Dyson (Lih-Ling Chern) of West Hartford, CT; and Laura Evancho (John) of Peoria, IL. Lovingly known as both Grandma and Dannah, she is survived by her grandchildren: Anne Sarco (Dean) and Matt Dyson (Katherine) of Los Angeles, CA; Elizabeth Attardi (Joseph) of Billerica, MA; Lauren Gray (Alex) of Jamaica Plain, MA; Brian Lipkin (Gina) of Pittsburgh, PA; Kevin Lipkin (Amy Nagengast) of San Francisco, CA; Greg Dyson of Philadelphia, PA; Alex Dyson of Farmington, CT; Kathryn and Sean Dyson of West Hartford, CT; and Ruth, Julia and Sophie Evancho of Peoria, IL. Her family also includes her great-grandchildren: Paloma, Flora, and Luella Sarco; Joey Rae and Layla Dyson; Benjamin Attardi; Emerson Gray; Charlotte and Henry Lipkin; and Cleo and Ellis Naglin. She also leaves many nieces and nephews.

Loretta was happiest when her whole family came together every year at Christmas to eat her famous roast beef and Yorkshire pudding and open all of the gifts that she had acquired throughout the year for each of them. She recently expressed that when you lose a parent, you lose your greatest cheerleader. She certainly was the greatest cheerleader for every single member of her large family and will be dearly missed. Ad astra!

A mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, August 25 at 10:00 am at St. Elizabeth Seton Church (of which Loretta was a founding member), 280 Brook Street, Rocky Hill, CT.

To honor Loretta's love of rescued cats, memorial donations are requested for the Connecticut Humane Society, 701 Russell Road, Newington, CT 06111.

Mrs. Dyson was my high school guidance counselor. She was kind and supportive throughout my time at South Catholic. My senior year was very challenging for me due to a car accident. Mrs. Dyson took me under her wing and helped me to get through the college application process. She was truly an angel. She made a hugely positive impact in my young life. Thank you Mrs. Dyson. May your rest in peace.

Sending my deepest condolences to Loretta´s family. What a legacy she has left- with her teaching, volunteerism, and most especially -her family.
I was one of the lucky ones to have Mrs Dyson as my guidance counselor. Little did I know what as a high school what a profound impact she would have on my life. She believed in me and championed my interests at every step- even into my 50´s. I was truly blessed to have known her. May you take comfort in the memories you have of your mom and grandmother of a life well lived!

My sincere condolences to David and the Dyson family. I met Loretta in 1993, when she walked into Shear Success for a haircut and I continued to do her hair for many years after. When Raymond was filling under the weather, I would travel to their home, to give him his haircut. Loretta was such a beautiful angel, with a soul of a saint. She brightened up a room when she appeared with her soft voice and contagious smile. She was knowledgeable about everything and enjoyed conversations with anyone who would listen. She made such an impact on my life, as I grew to know her personally and hear her stories about her family, which she adored with all her being. Loretta is now a Saint to us all.
She will be dearly missed by many.

I met Loretta when I worked very briefly at South Catholic in 1987. It was a challenging situation, and I will always remember her comforting support. Getting to know her was yet another instance of the tie we Saint Joseph College alumnae feel with each other, no matter when we attended the school.

Dear members of the Dyson family, please accept my condolences on the passing of your mother and grandmother. She was truly the matriarch of your family. I had the pleasure of knowing her for many years at our church, Saint Elizabeth, Seton in Rocky Hill. She touched many lives there, as well as during her years as guidance counselor at South Catholic. after reading her obituary, I saw but I gift a person she was, and how she use those gifts for the benefit of others. She is reunited with her loved ones in heaven. I´m sure she heard the words we all love to hear someday: well done, good and faithful servant. May her soul rest in peace. And may all who love her be comforted. In deepest sympathy, Jay Montalbano.

Mrs. Dyson was my guidance counselor at South Catholic. It was because of her that I went on to Smith College, an experience that shaped the direction in my life. Her daughter wrote a post on Facebook in 2020, sharing her contact information. I wrote to Mrs. Dyson in December of 2020, thanking her and sharing the highlights of my time since SC. She wrote a lovely, lengthy email back sharing her love of travel (the Alps, Berlin, Singapore, London...). She was particularly proud of the musicians (David and his kids Sean and Kathryn) and linguists (David's wife) in her family. As for New York (my home), she didn't care for it too much having lived near Yankee Stadium for four years. West Hartford was best. Sending love to her family. Barbara

Dear David & family ~ I met Loretta & your Dad many years ago on my mail delivery route and so looked forward to seeing them every day. They were the highlight of my day! She inspired me in so many ways especially to give back to the needy with the amazing work she did with the Tabor House. She was always in my thoughts even after my retirement and will continue to be in my heart always, the world has lost a beautiful soul but I hope she is joining her loved ones, much love to you Loretta.

I was just chatting w/my husband last week about Mrs. Dyson. She was the kindest person ever. She insisted on paying for my senior uniform when she found out I couldn't afford one. I remained in touch after graduation. Visiting her home frequently with my children when they were small. She gave me a tour of the apartments she ran in Hartford for HIV/Aides people in memory of her son Bill. I loved her with all my heart. I hope to attend the mass on 8/25.

Loretta was one of the most amazing women I ever met. I will carry her in my heart forever, and will never forget all of the stories we shared in our emails and letters to each other, and notes (as of late). Grandma Fenway (as I lovingly referred to her as) was so proud of her family. She had a heart of gold. Comforting thoughts and prayers are being sent to all she loved. I´m so thankful for the friendship we shared for many years. I will miss her....and I loved her very much!
