Loretta Grass Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Riposta Funeral Home - Belfast on Feb. 18, 2026.
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Loretta Pearl Grass of Knox, Maine on February 11, 2026. She was born in Castle Hill, Maine on August 5, 1929. The daughter of Floyd and Noreen Holmes, and moved to Freedom, Maine when she was two. Growing up in Freedom and attending Freedom Academy high school, she was nicknamed "Tootsie".

After marrying Raymond Grass, she and Ray moved to Connecticut and New York to run dairy farms. Then moving back to Knox, Maine, they started their own dairy farm, and raised four children. Loretta was very caring and hard-working, running the household, helping run the dairy farm and working at a canning factory in Freedom, Maine. After running the dairy farm for about 20 years, they started a restaurant called Ray's Diner. She basically managed the business, and did all the baking. She would bake as many as five pies and several dozen donuts every morning. And everyone loved her baking.

She was very involved in her church, Freedom Congregational, where she enjoyed cooking and baking for their monthly suppers.

She loved bowling and listening to country music, Her favorite singer was George Strait. She would listen to him and others when they traveled across the country on their vacations. She and her husband, Ray spent a lot of time in Arizona and Florida, typically during the winter months.

She was a very loving and caring wife and mother. Her husband, Raymond predeceased her in 1995, but she is survived by her brother Dennis Holmes and his wife Cheryl. Also surviving are her four children…sons Brian Grass and his wife Theo, Bruce Grass and significant other, Crystal Zachary , her daughter, Lorri and husband, Jay Cunningham and son Larry Grass, and his significant other April Hatch. Her two other brothers, Clinton "Sonny" Holmes, and Ronnie Holmes also predeceased her.

She was proud to be a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and a great great grandmother. She was dearly loved by many and will be missed by anyone who came in contact with her.

A celebration of her life and Funeral will be held at the Freedom Congregational Church on Saturday March 7, 2026 at 11 AM. Please come and help us say goodbye to this wonderful woman. There will be refreshments and fellowship to share memories about this wonderful woman after the service.
