Lorin H. Avery, aged 93 years 11 months, a resident of Portland Oregon passed away Sunday November 2, 2025 (All Souls Day) in SE Portland.
Lorin was born December 2, 1931, in Selby South Dakota to Clinton H. Avery and Grace E. Sievert. After moving to Portland Oregon, Lorin's father passed away in 1941. His Mother remarried to James Moravec who became his stepdad. Lorin was married to Mary M. Wallner at St. Anthonys church on June 02, 1956. They purchased a home and spent their adult lives together in SE Portland on 114 St. near Holgate.
Lorin attended elementary school at St. Stevens in Portland, and at Concord grade school in Milwaukie. Lorin completed his education at Milwaukie High School. Lorin later enlisted in the United States Navy where he served during the Korean war on board the heavy cruiser USS Los Angeles in Korean waters. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1954.
Lorin spent the majority of his working career at United Groceries as a warehouseman. He was an active member of the Teamsters Union. Lorin spent a lot of his free time in the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and member of the NRA. He always had a large garden where he produced massive amounts of tomatoes and other fresh vegetables. He also grew beautiful dahlias. Lorin was also a huge sports buff. New York Yankees, Green Bay Packers, and Notre Dame were his favorites. Lorin spent the last two years of his life at St. Anthony's assisted living across the hall from his younger sister Phyillis where he made many new friends.
Lorin was preceded in death by his wife Mary Avery, his father's Clinton Avery and James Moravec, his mother Grace Moravec, His sister Pat Shannon, and son Mark Avery.
Lorin is survived by his sons Clinton, Clayton and William Avery; his 3 grandchildren Jennifer, Chad, and Sarah; 3 great-grandchildren Brittaney, Joshua, and Dustin; great-great-granddaughter Ember.
A Catholic mass is planned for Friday November 14 at St. Anthony's church at 11:00 am In SE Portland. There will be food and refreshments after mass at the St. Anthony's Hall (cafeteria).
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Anthony Catholic Church.
