We gather with heavy hearts to celebrate the life of Lorna "Joan" Murray, who left us on August 14, 2025, at the age of 92, in Plantation, Florida. Born on July 29, 1933, in Murray Harbor North, Prince Edward Island, Canada, Joan was the beloved matriarch of the Murray family and a beacon of love and support to all who knew her.
Joan’s life was filled with purpose, having enjoyed successful careers as a Human Resources specialist with Landmark, C&S Bank, and Bank of America. She dedicated 18 years to the Plantation Police Department's Detective Bureau as an Administrative Executive Assistant, a role in which she exemplified diligence and commitment.
In her move to South Florida in 1957, Joan embraced the role of a devoted mother while maintaining a warm and welcoming home for her three sons. Her son William "Paul" Murray, along with his late wife Rebecca "Becky" Murray, Robert Murray and his wife Linda, James Murray and his wife Tina, were the joys of her life. Joan cherished her grandchildren, Kevin, Katelyn, Erica, Jennifer and Kenneth, and delighted in being a great-grandmother to little Maverick Swathwood. Each visit from her family brought her immense happiness and a sense of fulfillment that only a mother and grandmother can know.
Joan found great joy in hosting events for family and friends and held weekly Sunday dinners, ensuring that her loved ones were never far from her heart. The Christmas holidays were particularly special to her, marked by her love for traditional Victorian-style decorations and the warmth of family togetherness, where memories were made and cherished.
With a legacy steeped in spirituality, Joan was a devoted member of the Sunset Presbyterian Church for 68 years, embodying her faith in every aspect of her life. She served the church with grace, tirelessly committing herself to her religious community and the values she held dear.
The loss of Joan is immeasurable, leaving behind lasting memories of her loving spirit and grace that will forever echo in the hearts of those she touched. She is predeceased by her ex-husband Harold Daniel Murray, her parents Lorne Samuel Johnston and Irene Johnston, and they are fondly remembered by those of us who remain.
The Family, in keeping with Joan's wishes are holding a private viewing and graveside service at the Lauderdale Memorial Park on 08/21/25. Please keep Joan's memory alive in your hearts and minds in the coming days and months and years. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 3550 Davie Blvd. Fort Lauderdale Florida 33312.
As we bid farewell to our dear Joan, we celebrate the remarkable woman she was — a source of strength, unwavering love, and kindness who made our lives brighter. She will be profoundly missed but never forgotten.
