Lorraine Flye Obituary
She was born Nov. 13, 1927, in Luck, Wis., to Lars Peterson and Dagmar (Jensen). While still a toddler she moved with her parents to Kelso/Longview.
She was a loving mother and devoted homemaker. For a time she was a librarian at the Kelso Library, and passed on her love of reading to her family. With her family she also enjoyed times at the beach, hiking in the mountains, regional fairs and attractions, and vacations with her grandson. She had a fondness for Halloween, dressing the whole house up with decorations and devising troves of treats for children. She additionally had a soft spot for creatures great and small. She helped raise many an odd pet, created a haven for backyard birds, and walked around Lake Sacajawea nearly every day, where she knew all the ducks, geese, squirrels – and regular walkers – by heart.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Flye.
She is survived by her sons and their families, Rob Flye, wife Lisa and stepdaughters, Marisa and Linnea of Seattle, and Dan Flye, wife Shelly and their son, Zachary of Raleigh, N.C.; by her sister, Mildred Laine and husband, Eino Laine of Longview; and by her niece, Connie Shames and husband, Jeff Shames of Melbourne Beach, Fla.
At her request, there will be no service.
In lieu of flowers, in her memory help feed all the little creatures that will miss her.
Arrangements are by Columbia Funeral Service.

I am so sorry for your loss -- just found out about her passing. I did not know Mrs. Flye personally, but heard all about her through my friend who was her letter carrier. Each day, after she was through reading it, Mrs. Flye left the sports pages of the Seattle PI for her mail lady, as she was also a fan of the Seattle teams. She did this for several years -- every day, unless she was away on vacation! We always tried to bring back something from the Mariners games we attended, to let her know we were thinking of her. She was certainly a special, kind and loving person; what a privilege to have had her in our lives!

Although we have only known Lorraine for a few years, we knew her as a very special lady. She was very active and independent. On her trips to Raleigh, NC to see her son and his family, she walked several of the 2 to 5 mile nature trails in the city by herself while they were working. Lorraine commented on how wonderful the flora and fauna were on these walks and looked forward to future trips down NC trails. As on her walks at home, she also enjoyed conversations with other walkers.
Lorraine was a very special grandmother and absolutely loved being with her grandson. She enjoyed bugs, snakes and shared her interest in them with him. She passed her love and nurturing of creatures great and small to her sons and her youngest son instilled those virtues in her grandson from a very early age.
At each of the holidays, she would prepare a box of toys, candy, trinkets and gadgets for her grandson, Zachary. I am sure she hand picked each little gift with lots of thought. Then, she must have spent hours wrapping up each item individually and then packing them in between layers of packing popcorn. Lorraine was definitely a kid at heart as she made the unwrapping as exciting as the present. And the Halloween box always contained plenty of toy spiders and bugs.
In recent years, she had made several trips with her extended family. She enjoyed traveling with her family to Florida, North Carolina, Portland OR, Vancouver BC, and Washington DC. Not only did she enjoy the new sights and scenery, but again she made time to talk with the natives to learn more about the area.

I opened the paper & saw her face & thought, Oh no, I know this lady. I did not know her name but knew she was one of our devoted lake walking buddies. We would always stop & chat when we saw each other, about everything & anything. She was a bright spot in my walk. Talked to 2 other of my walking friends & one guy said he had just talked to her last week. Another lady also talked to me about her today. I always thought she was such a cute little lady & so enthusiastic about everything. Loved everyone & everything always so kind. We will all miss her so very much. My prayers are with you. We are so sorry to hear of your loss as well as ours! We didn't know your mom well except for trick or treating her house on Halloween. We live on Niblett Way and our two young sons loved to trick or treat at your mom's house because of her decorations and her sweet spirit as she would allow them to pick something off of her tray that she presented to them. What a sweetheart she was. Every year we would tell her that her and her house were our favorite to visit and we loved coming to see her. When we went out this year on Halloween we noticed her lights were off and got concerned as she has never missed a Halloween. When we went to the house across the street (Ainslies) she said she was also concerned for her as she just never misses out on this holiday. We were sad to read of her passing. She will truly be missed. She holds a dear place in our hearts and will be remembered every Halloween. The neighborhood will not be the same without her.

although I didn't know Mrs. Flye personally only as a very nice lady whom I seen almost everyday walking my three dogs around the lake she would always tell me how nice it was to hear my hound (Beagle) howling as he would track anything from squirrels to other Dogs, People etc. it didn't matter and she would laugh saying you just can't take the hunting instinct out of him she would always pat my boys on the head then go on feeding the squirrels and. And after my granddaughter was born and started going around the lake she would laugh at me trying to keep all three boys from getting tangled in the stroller. And she would always have something nice to say to Brooklynn, she always had a bright smile. Brooklynn, I and the boys sure will miss her and I know the squirrels will

Lorraine was working at the Kelso Library when I got my first job there during high school. She was always so friendly and helpful whenever we met at the Lake, the Library, the Farmers Market or garage sales. She will be missed by many.

My name is Eric Slind. Mrs. Flye's son Rob and I were childhood friends from first grade all the way through high school. When we were still in grade school, Rob invited me with his family to go to Star Wars in Portland. This was a huge event for me. Rob's parent's as well as Rob and his brother Danny were such fantastic people. I particularily remember Rob's mother stopping on the sidewalk that night on the way to the movie to pick up a night crawler which was headed to a dreadful end and she carefully put it back into the grass so it could go on about its business. I was amazed and even though this might seem like a small act of concern for God's creatures she loved them all great and small. Now 30 years later, my wife and our three young children have gotten to know Mrs. Flye walking around Lake Sacajawea. The lady, who saves worms, as my kids affectionally know her and has special ways with the squirrels, is still as lovely as the first day I met her so many years ago. We are going to dearly miss her. Now just as I was my children have been positively impacted to "make a difference" even in the small matters of life such as saving a night crawler. Thank you Mrs. Flye for making "the difference".

Jack and I knew Lorraine from seeing her almost every morning as we passed and stopped to visit while walking around Lake Sacajawea. She was a dear and lovely lady and will be terribly missed.
