Louis Paul Flaim

October 8, 1933 - July 30, 2025

Lou Flaim was an amazing man who touched the lives all who were fortunate enough to meet him.  His Faith, Love of Family, Integrity, Intelligence, Hard Work, and Humor, inspired so many.  His trademark look -- black-rimmed glasses, no-nonsense wardrobe, and warm smile -- remained unchanged throughout his life.

He died, age 91 at his home in Littleton, CO on July 30th, 2025, peacefully, and surrounded by family. The youngest of four children born to Louis and Margaret (Overton) Flaim, he was preceded in death by Don and Joe Flaim, and his sister Edna Kite. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years Patricia (Blong), his four children, Margaret “Meg” (Michael) Hall of Denver, Paula (Joe) Suhr of Denver, Geraldine (Jim) Lewis of Sandpoint, ID, and Michael (Monica) Flaim of Littleton. His 11 grandchildren, Daniel, David, Patrick, and Peter Hall; Nicholas (Kendall), Benjamin, and Rebecca (Cris) Suhr; Chris (Cindy) Lewis, Mike Lewis, Beth (Kyler) Higgins, and Kate (Brandon) Olson, and his great grandchildren, Samuel Suhr, Walter Lewis, and Piper Higgins.

Lou, drafted into the army during the Korean war, ended his service as a Lieutenant and then attended the Missouri School of Mines in Rolla on the GI Bill. He worked in Alaska for the highway department, and after marrying Pat Flaim, completed a masters degree back in Missouri and transitioned to the petroleum industry working in Bahrain, Libya, Indonesia, Wyoming, Colorado, Indonesia again, and Pakistan before retiring back to Colorado. He was a Vice President of Production for two international oil companies. In retirement, Lou and Pat, strong in their Catholic Faith, and having enriched their churches worldwide, spent four years working as Maryknoll missionaries in Tanzania. Here, they learned Swahili and lived beside the Luo people near Lake Victoria where they built a Roman Catholic church (St. Louis). On the completion of their mission time, they returned to Littleton, where Lou volunteered at the Denver Samaritan House, and worked for 20 years for South Suburban Parks and Rec, bringing out golf carts and hunting for lost golf balls.

He was a lifelong golfer and a lover of baseball and the St. Louis Cardinals. But really, any sport was interesting to him and he was able to quote games and statistics, due not only to watching them, but also studying the players, scores, and history in the World Almanac, which was always a Christmas gift to him from the family. Lou had a wealth of information and anecdotes as a result of his extensive travels and reading of non-fiction. Conversations with him would range from seeing the 1959 Kentucky Derby winner, to playing golf in Libya on oiled sand “greens”, to poetry. He loved playing cards and conversations around the card table were always a source of variety and interest.

Lou’s goodness came through in how he lived and how many people dedicated themselves to being better people after meeting him. His Faith was central to his character and his devotion to daily mass, the rosary, and the power of prayer were the foundation of his goodness and care of others. An excellent listener, Lou would remember conversations, reflect upon them, and share them back with people he may have only met briefly. Everyone felt seen and heard by this wonderful and humble man, and we are all better people for having met and known Lou Flaim.

The funeral service will be 10am Friday, August 8, 2025 at Risen Christ church. The rosary will be said at 9:30am. Gifts or donations in memory of Louis Paul Flaim could go to the Denver Samaritan House.
