Steven Louis Flaim, 62, passed away in his sleep on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at his home in Granger, IN. Born in Washington, D.C. on April 4,1963 to Charles Ernest Flaim and Margery (Hoops) Flaim, he first lived in Alexandria, VA, then Rockville, MD, Mohegan Lake, NY, and Yardley, PA before moving to Granger in 1975. He has remained a resident of the South Bend area ever since.
Steve graduated from Clay High School, South Bend, in 1981. He attended Valparaiso University for two years and eventually earned his BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University. He was employed by Peterson Engineering, then James Childs Architects, both of South Bend.
On November 5, 1994, in South Bend, Steve wed Joyce Ellen (Komp) Flaim, who preceded him in death in 2011. He is survived by his mother, Margery Flaim of Granger; son S. Charles Flaim, residing in South Carolina; daughter Kathryn M. Flaim (Ethan Suddarth) of South Bend; grandchildren EJ, Bravery, Elias, and Parker Suddarth. He is also survived by stepsons Joseph and Jason Keltz of South Bend, and Dustin (Sara) Wisniewski of Lakeville, Indiana.
Steve is survived by two sisters, Laura Flaim of South Bend, and Karla (Roy) Wirtz of South Bend, as well as nieces and nephews Carolyn Wirtz-Poelstra (Brandon), and Christian, Caitlin, and Carson Wirtz. He was preceded in death by his father Charles.
Steve had a thirst for knowledge. He enjoyed discussions about almost any topic-- from mechanics, technology, and construction to religion, history, and current events. It was important to him for people to understand his points of view. Steve tinkered with construction and automotive endeavors throughout his life. He tried his hand at home remodeling, and he had a brief foray into the world of drag racing with his beloved Toyota Supra. Once he had children, he turned his focus toward their activities. He was an active parent volunteer for South Side Little League. Later in life, his purest source of delight was his four grandsons, whom he loved dearly. Steve was also known for following his Christian principles of helping those who couldn't help themselves. He will be missed by many who loved him.
Honoring Steve's wishes, he will be cremated and laid to rest with his wife Joyce at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Private graveside services and burial are pending.
