James Moen Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hahn Funeral Home on Jan. 2, 2026.
James A. Moen, a man of great humor, love, and remarkable handiness, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2026, at the age of 79, in Elkhart, Indiana. Born on August 6, 1946, in Tiffin, Ohio, Jim led a rich and fulfilling life centered on family, faith, service, and his many passions.

Jim was the devoted husband of Linda for 56 years, a marriage that exemplified enduring love and partnership. Together, they built a warm and welcoming home and raised two children: son Richard (Emily) and daughter Jamie Yoko (Tim). He was the proud and loving grandfather of Seth Moen, Dylan Moen, Cameron Yoko, and Grayson Yoko. Jim cherished his role as husband, father, and grandfather above all, and his legacy of kindness and laughter will live on in their hearts.

A graduate of Clay High School, Jim was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1966 and proudly served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. His military experience sparked a lifelong passion for aircraft, leading him to attend Spartan Aviation School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Professionally, Jim dedicated himself with skill and reliability, working at Springfield Airport and Mt. Vernon Airport before a 33-year career at Bendix/Allied Signal/Bosch in South Bend. He retired in 2008 but continued his craft at Kessington Machine Shop in Elkhart until full retirement in 2012.

In his free time, Jim poured his talents into working on anything mechanical, including a classic 1962 Impala. His love for woodworking produced cherished pieces for family and friends. Additionally, his immense passion for landscaping transformed his yard into a beautiful oasis. Jim absolutely loved his golden retriever dogs throughout the years, who brought endless joy, companionship, and laughter to his days. Those who knew him best remember Jim as incredibly handy, hilariously funny, and deeply loving. He would offer a hand to anyone and had an unmatched ability to fix anything-or mend a heart with his compassion.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Linda; children, Richard (Emily) and Jamie (Tim); grandchildren, Seth, Dylan, Cameron, and Grayson; brother, Bill; cousin, Judy Scherger (Pat); nephews, Jeff, Brian (Michelle), and Jason (Melora); as well as many other extended family members and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his twin brother, John, who is survived by his wife Mary.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Humane Society of Elkhart County or St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Elkhart, Indiana.

Jim will be profoundly missed, but his spirit of love, laughter, and service will guide us always. His life was a gift, and his story will inspire generations to come.

A visitation will take place on Friday, January 9, 2026, in St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 1331 N Main St, Elkhart, from 9:30AM – 10:30 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 AM, in the church. Entombment to follow in St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery, Baugo Township, IN 46516.
