Rev. Dr. Louis R. Jasper, age 90, passed peacefully in his sleep on Monday, February 3, 2025 in Clifton Springs, NY. Louis was predeceased by wife Joan Helen (Weissbach), sister (Alice) Marilyn Dippold. Survived by 3 daughters: Julia (Stephen) Deal, Judith Jasper, Joanne (Marshall) Schmitt, 3 grandchildren: Timothy (Nikki) Springer, Benjamin (Chantel) Springer, Eric Deal, and 5 great-grandchildren, brother Roger (Pat) Jasper.
Louis was born in Brooklyn, NY, attended Concordia Prep School and College in Bronxville, NY. Louis & Joan met at Concordia in Bronxville and married in 1957. Julia was born in 1958. Louis was ordained as a Lutheran minister in 1959. Judy was born in 1960 and Joanne in 1961. After working in the NYC area as a pastor for the deaf, in 1967 Louis and Joan moved the family to Hong Kong, where they were missionaries until 1975. Louis established a school for the deaf in Hong Kong and traveled to several other schools, including Concordia School for Special Education (CSSE) in Macau.
Upon their return to NYC in 1975 Louis earned a Masters and a Doctorate in Education from Columbia, while working as the Dean of Students at Lexington School for the Deaf.
Louis and Joan returned to Hong Kong / Macau from 1981 to 1996, leaving one year before the 99 year lease of Hong Kong to Great Britain concluded. In 1996 they settled in Newark, NY to be near their children and grandchildren. Louis continued his ministry by serving as vacancy pastor at several churches in the Finger Lakes region, and remained on the board of the school in Macau.
Funeral services will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Newark, NY on February 13th at 11 am with a light lunch to follow.
