Louise Winton Luring

1940 - 2026

Louise Winton (Forbes) Luring died March 10, 2026. She was born in Orange, N.J., May 5, 1940, the daughter of George and Marian (Holbrook) Forbes.

She earned degrees from Bound Brook (N.J.) High School, Tufts University, and the School for International Training.

While in college, she studied in Mexico, beginning a lifelong love affair with the country, its people, culture and language.

On October 10, 1970, she married William Luring. They met while working for The Experiment in International Living.

Besides teaching Spanish, she had a variety of jobs: travel agent, newspaper reporter, and owner of a small guest house.

She was very involved in countless local activities and organizations, and served 25 years on the board of trustees of the Village of Saxtons River. Committed to the advancement of women and girls, she was a life-long Girl Scout, and a 50-year member of the American Association of University Women.

Some of her most satisfying experiences were building houses in Puebla, Mexico, with Jimmy Carter and Habitat for Humanity, several medical and dental missions to El Salvador, and a latrine-building mission to Nicaragua with Road Scholar.

She was predeceased by her husband in 2011 and her sister, Gail Greaves. She is survived by her daughters, Elena Luring of Saxtons River and Marianna Luring (Garo Taft) of Brooklyn, N.Y., and three grandchildren, Sophia Cardini, Jack Cardini, and Aram Taft. She is also survived by her sister, Elizabeth Davis of Virginia.

At her request, there will be no service. Memorial contributions may be made to Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains, Our Place Drop-in Center of Bellows Falls, or one of the many organizations she loved.
