Louise Frances Matthews

Louise Frances Matthews, lovingly known as Duchess, was born on April 28, 1954, in Washington, DC to John Frances Matthews and Thelma Lee Matthews. She was the only daughter among her siblings and, as such, was the apple of her father's eye and spoiled with much love and attention. Duchess received her early education at St. Martin's School and was an active member of St. Martin's Church. She later attended McKinley Tech High School, graduating with the Class of 1973. She began her working life in the family business, Johnny Matthews Trucking Company, where she learned secretarial and business skills. Duchess later worked as a flag girl for Clark Construction before finding a job she truly enjoyed, driving buses for WMATA. She loved the freedom of being on the road, the people she met, and the many stories she gathered along her routes. Duchess accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior at New Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Washington, DC. In her lifetime, she was married to Aaron Woolfolk, and from that union came her daughter, Kenya. She later had four other children: Francine, Kevin, Katrina (who preceded her in death), and Kaprice. Duchess' life was not without struggles, and there were times when she faced challenges that made her path more difficult. Though she was present in her children's lives, much of their upbringing was lovingly supported by her mother, Thelma. Despite these hardships, Duchess' vibrant spirit could never be dimmed. She was smart, sharp-witted, and incredibly funny. Loud and bold, she was never afraid to speak her mind. She loved to read, could finish a 500-page novel in less than a week, and was just as quick to cuss you out as she was to give you the shirt off her back. She had a love for cooking and bringing people together over a good meal. She was the life of the party, fun to be around, quick with a laugh, and full of energy. Her heart was kind and giving, and despite the hardships, she left an impression everywhere she went. Later in life, after undergoing knee surgery, Duchess resided at Kensington Nursing Facility, where she continued to brighten the room with her laughter and lively personality. Even in fragile health, her spirit remained high. She was known for her beautiful smile, her quick humor, and her ability to keep those around her laughing and talking. Louise leaves behind her children, Francine (Dempsey), Kenya, Kevin (Rashonda) and Kaprice; her brothers Carvel and Donald (Deborah/Slem) and nine grandchildren, Arabia, Arikka, Mercy, Josiah, Elijah, Mazziah, Madison, Skylar, and Raegan, as well as a host of loving family members and friends. Though her journey was imperfect and filled with both joy and challenge, Duchess will be remembered for her vibrant personality, her resilience, her love of family gatherings, and her unforgettable spirit.
