Lowell Dean Baker passed away at the age of 91 on September 8, 2025 with his lifetime loves still remaining as God and his family. Lowell was the fourth child of Wayne and Anna Mary Baker’s 11 children. He was born at home in Powell, WY at their 1st Street South house. Lowell graduated with his class of 1952 and received the FFA “State Farmer” award that same year. He attended two years of college at Northwest Community College (now Northwest College). He played on their college basketball team, the Lions, for both years.
Lowell married his high school sweetheart, Donabeth Basham on November 27, 1955. They were together for more than 65 years, farming and serving the Lord and His church in various capacities which allowed their light to shine to all they encountered. In 1957, they welcomed their daughter, Cheryl Ann; in 1958 their son, Daniel Lowell; in 1960 their daughter, Annette Lenore and in 1962 their daughter, Amanda Beth.
Lowell and Donabeth were Foster Parents for the state of Wyoming, loving and rearing four different groups of children as if they were their own, totaling 12 in all. Many young adults were still welcomed into their home after their own children were grown. Lowell & Donabeth loved & cared for many “younger generation” people & they in turn, continued to love Lowell & Donabeth through the decades by keeping in touch through calls, letters & visits.
In 1996, he served on the Powell School Board and later also served as president of the PTA.
He achieved “High Ten Beet Grower” for two years from 1973 - 1974. He also volunteered for several years to serve on the Great Western Committee Research Board that covered five states. He was a member of the York College Advisory Board for four years where his two daughters attended.
Lowell loved to tinker and he could ‘jimmy-rigg’ things with the best of them. His hobbies included Bible studies, hunting, fishing, flying his planes, creating fun playground equipment for his kids and singing hymns for the Lord. Over the years, he also used the airplanes he owned to aid in Search and Rescue recovery missions, flying war veterans to their reunions and flying friends and family to long distance medical appointments. People could sit and listen to his stories for hours, enjoying the good old days and the gathering of loved ones. In 2002, they retired from their farming life, moving to Cody.
Lowell was preceded in death by his eldest daughter, Cheryl Ann, to leukemia in April of 1998, his wife of 62 years, Donabeth, in 2018, and five of his brothers and sisters - Kenneth, Ima Jean, Alice, Coy, and Mary Lou.
Lowell leaves behind his son Daniel (and Shannon), daughter Annette (and Michael), daughter Amanda Beth (and Christian), as well as his brothers and sisters Wilma Benson, Max Baker, Harvey Baker, Marjorie Parker, and Dorthy Kister.
His life’s celebration will be held at Cody Church of Christ, 2044 Stampede Avenue, on September 26, 2025 at 10:30 am.
