Lowell Richard Cox

Lowell Richard “Rick” Cox, Jr., 66, passed away on February 6, 2026. Born on November 27, 1959, and raised in Lyons, Illinois, Rick lived a life defined by service, strength, and an unwavering devotion to his family.

After graduating high school, Rick answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army. His military career spanned Active Duty, the Army Reserves, and the Illinois Army National Guard, where he rose to the rank of Sergeant.

It was during his time stationed in Germany that Rick met the love of his life, Sophie — in the middle of a grass fight at a rock concert. What started as a spontaneous and spirited moment became the beginning of a lifelong love story rooted in loyalty, laughter, and resilience.

Following his military service, Rick built an accomplished civilian career centered in telecommunications and security systems. He was known for his technical expertise, his ability to explain complex topics with clarity, and his steady leadership.

Service was never just a career for Rick—it was a calling. He volunteered extensively with the county Emergency Management Agency and the Search and Rescue Team, served on the Citizens Corps Council training committee, and was one of the primary trainers for the local CERT organization. He believed deeply in preparedness, community, and helping others in moments of crisis.

Yet for all his professional accomplishments, Rick’s greatest pride and joy was his family. He is survived by his darling wife, Sophie; his beloved daughters, Nikki Shaw (Kevin), Bianca Hamm (Eric), and Michelle MacMillan (Chris); his cherished grandchildren, Tobin, Jackson, Delaney, and Wilder.  He is further survived by his father, Lowell R.Cox Sr. and his brothers, Chris and Michael Cox. 

He never missed a game, a performance, or an opportunity for adventure. Whether it was a museum trip, a show, or a sporting event, “Opa” was there—present, proud, and ready to make memories.

Rick lived by the motto “Semper Gumby”—always flexible. It was more than a phrase; it was how he approached life’s challenges: adaptable, steady, and forward-moving no matter the obstacle.

He will be remembered for his servant’s heart, his sharp mind, his deep love for Sophie and his girls, and the pure delight he found in his grandchildren. His legacy lives on in the strength he instilled, the lessons he taught, and the example he set.

He will be profoundly missed and forever honored.

Visitation will be held on Monday, February 16, 2026, from 4 p.m. to time of Memorial Service at 6:30 p.m. all at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 419 E Terra Cotta Avenue, Crystal Lake, IL 60014.
