Lowell joined the United States Army in 1948 after graduating early from Castlemont High School at the age of 17. After getting injured while training in Army Airborne School, he served his duties in Strasbourg
Austria during the Korean Conflict as an MP, and later as Company Clerk, where he learned to drive Tanks. He finished his tour of duty and was Honorably discharged in 1956 as a Sergeant in Fort Ord of
Monterey, CA.
He married Marilyn in 1960. They had three boys between 1961 through 1964, which along with Marilyn's two children from a previous marriage, completed their five children in total.
Lowell loved his family with all his heart and took pride in being able to provide for them, often going without or less for himself in order to do so. Lowell was a member of the Teamster's Union, Local 70 in
Oakland, CA and drove big rigs for a total of 37 years between McGrath Steel, Stewart Drayage and ABF.
Lowell was very much a social butterfly. He could strike up a conversation with anybody, and loved telling stories about the old days growing up with his family, friends, and time in the service. Until the very end, Lowell had an extremely witty personality, and never missed an opportunity to weave that wit and jokes into any and all conversations, even when the other person had no sense of humor, he carried on an amused himself.
The activities he loved most centered around family and friends. Where siblings, spouses, children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends could all gather at once. Most of the time that meant large camping trips or huge loud gatherings at someone's home (usually Uncle Johnny's), and always included lots of food, Hawaiian music and dancing. But he also enjoyed bowling, going square dancing with his dear wife Marilyn, working on cars, and was an avid card player.
Lowell's loving nature, and sweet smile will be dearly missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Disbled American Veterans, http://help.dav.org in memory of Lowell Paul Garcia Sr.
