Antonio Luciano De Souza graduated from this life on June 11, 2024—his 80th birthday—in Eagle Mountain, Utah, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by those who had the honor of knowing him.
Born in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, on June 11, 1944, Luciano’s journey began under humble circumstances. Guided by the wisdom instilled by his father from a young age, he embraced the value of education and hard work as his gateway to a brighter future. Excelling in all his endeavors, Luciano’s thirst for knowledge led him to become a sergeant in the Brazilian army to support his education. His pursuit of learning culminated in his graduation from the Federal University of Pernambuco and eventually establishing himself as a reputable attorney specializing in Corporate Law. He championed the causes of the underprivileged and often provided legal aid pro bono. He selflessly fulfilled needs wherever he saw them arising.
Luciano’s love for and dedication to the gospel of Jesus Christ was at the center of every pursuit in his life. Persuaded by a persistent friend in his youth to attend church with him, Luciano recognized truth and light in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He joined the church in 1962 at the age of 19, and immediately served a mission in the Brazil South Mission building chapels. Luciano was a faithful member of the church for the rest of his life, serving as a branch president, a bishop, and a stake president. He and his beloved wife, Jerusa, were sealed for time and all eternity in the São Paulo Brazil Temple.
Known for being an attentive listener and having a desire to bring joy to others, Luciano was a pillar of strength and support to many. His role as a father was particularly dear to him, and he sought every opportunity to share his wisdom with his children.
Luciano is survived by his loving wife, Jerusa De Souza; sons Luciano Jr. (Alenilde), Mossoro, RN, Brazil; Sergio (Ana), Houston, TX; Flavio (Glauciane), Eusebio, CE, Brazil; Paulo (Leslie), Queen Creek, AZ; Jacques (Stephanie), Eagle Mountain, UT; Caio, Apodi, RN, Brazil; daughter Semiramis (Dustin) Kendall, Highland, UT; two brothers; twenty-two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both of his parents, a brother, and a sister.
As we mourn the loss of this great man, we remember him for the profound impact he had on all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his spirit continue to guide us toward acts of kindness and generosity as we cherish the memories he has left behind.
