Our beloved sister and aunt, Lucille Marie Porterfield, passed away Friday, January 17, 2025. Lucille was born December 15, 1937, to S. Willie Mae English Porterfield and Mitchell Roy Porterfield Sr.
Lucille graduated from Michigan State University with bachelor's and master’s degrees in education. She began teaching in Saginaw, at Crary Lincoln Elementary School in September 1959. She was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School before relocating to Detroit, Michigan, in 1961. She was employed as a teacher with the Detroit Public School system until her retirement. She excelled in her profession and received many accolades.
Lucille was an outgoing, fun-loving person who enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, theatrical plays, bowling, tennis, archery, horseback riding, and dancing. She also taught her 6th-grade students ballroom dancing. Lucille was a "clothes horse" and loved to shop. She even did some modeling under the name Penny Mitchell. She was a classy and sassy lady. Lucille loved going to concerts and was a true fan of Motown music. She loved her family, and her family loved her in return. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
Lucille leaves to cherish her memory two sisters, Connie D. Middlebrooks, and Gwenda L. Porterfield; one brother Mitchell Roy Porterfield; one niece, Janine M. Porterfield; one nephew, Derek (Stephanie) Middlebrooks; great-nieces, Bryanha A. Middlebrooks, Madison C. Porterfield, Mallory K. Porterfield, Brooklyn S. Porterfield, Hannah O. Wilson, Bailey S. Porterfield; great-grand-nieces, Azaio M. Porterfield and A’moura Calloway; great-nephews, Jacob R. Beechler, and Hollister M. Hill; and a family of cousins (English, Porterfield, Dunn, Hall, Oates, and Thelma Butler-Smith families); many other relatives and friends including special friends, Doreen Leek, Isabel Swaggert Holmes, and the Saginaw High School Class of 1955.
Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, S. Willie Mae English Porterfield and Mitchell Roy Porterfield Sr., and nephew, Brian A. Middlebrooks, along with other family members.
The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Altamash Amin.
