Lucille "Lucy" Susic

Lucille "Lucy" Susic, 95, of Ankeny ,IA, went home to be with her beloved Savior on April 28th at her residence at Edencrest in Ankeny. Visitation will be at 1:00 at Ankeny Memorial Gardens on May 2nd, funeral services will immediately follow at 2:00. Lucy was the oldest of six children, born to Herman and Bernice DeBok in Russell, IA, where she lived on a farm until graduating from Russell High School in 1940. She moved to Des Moines where she worked as a secretary until she met the love of her life, Jack Susic. They married in 1946 and shortly thereafter moved to Ankeny where they raised their family: Lynn, Jeff, and Kris. Lucy loved people and never met a stranger. She and Jack were avid golfers and were charter members of the Ankeny Golf & Country Club. Lucy won many tournaments and had four holes-in-one in her days on the course. After losing Jack in 1983, Lucy continued her love for golf inTexas where she wintered for more than 20 years with her two sisters. She was also an accomplished seamstress and quilter, producing countless beautiful works of art. Her quilts are cherished by her children, grandchildren and charities to which they were generously given. Lucy was a joy to her family and anyone who came to know her. Her wit and fiestiness, even to the end, always triggering those around her to laugh and smile. She volunteered at the preschool across the street from her home and enjoyed long walks, being in her yard, playing cards and whipping whoever would take her on in a game of Rummikub. Lucy is preceded in death by her husband, Jack, and her two brothers, Jake and Rod DeBok. She is survived by her three siblings: Ellen Hawkins, Chuck DeBok (Jo) and Gerry Fitzgerald. Three children: Lynn Calkins (Ray), Jeff Susic (Linda), and Kris Schlemmer (Jeff). Five grandchildren: Jenny Trainor-(Aaron), Jeff Calkins, Zach Susic (Tina), Holly Moran (Dustin), and Meg Schlemmer (Jake). And six great-grandchildren: Dayla & Colten, Tyler & Levi, and Decker & Tana. In lieu of flowers donations will used in memorial for Jack and Lucy.
