Ludwika "Lu" Hofmann, née Tenikat, age 97 of East Troy, WI, passed away peacefully at
her home on Tuesday, August 5, 2025. Lu was born on May 17, 1928, to Eva (Lenkat)
and Jurgis Tenikat, in Bimbilin, Lithuania. She fled Lithuania in 1941, during the Soviet
invasion of her country, and spent much of the war in an internment camp in the
German-occupied Polish territories. As World War II continued, and the Soviet Army
marched westward, she made her way to Dresden, where she survived the phosphorus
bombardment of Dresden by US and British air forces. She eventually reunited with her
mother and brother, Jonas (Jonny), and settled in Trabelsdorf, Germany, where she met
Heinrich (Henry) Hofmann. They married on June 12, 1954. In June 1956, Lu and
Henry, with mother Eva and daughter Evita, emigrated to the USA and settled in
Chicago, IL. There they welcomed daughter Isabella, and sons Henry and Paul. In 1971
they moved to a farm outside of East Troy, WI, and remained there until 2001. Lu and
Henry moved into East Troy and remained there until Henry passed in 2013 and Lu
passed in 2025. Lu worked in various occupations throughout her life but was most
proud of becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant in the 1980's and working at Holton
Manor Nursing Home in Elkhorn, WI, until she retired in her late seventies.
Lu was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and enjoyed socializing with
friends during game days at the church. She enjoyed gardening and loved being
surrounded by flowers, plants, and animals--especially dogs.
Ludwika is survived by her four children: Eva (Earl) of Chicago, IL, Isabella of Sherman Oaks,
CA, Henry (Rose) of Monrovia, CA, and Paul (Anna) of Milwaukee, WI. She is further
survived by her grandchildren, Atticus Baldwin, of Sherman Oaks, CA, and Mira
Berkson, of Chicago, IL, as well as her nephews, Manfred Tenikat and Georg Tenikat, in
Germany, with their extended families, and numerous family members in Germany and
the United States. Many thanks go out to Aurora Hospice at Home for their loving care
and guidance.
A visitation and celebration of Ludwika's life will be held on Wednesday, August 13,
2025. Visitation will be from 11 am to 1 pm, with service following immediately
thereafter, at Legacy Funeral Services, 2974 Main Street, East Troy, WI. A fellowship
meal with follow at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church meeting hall after conclusion of the
service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the family are suggested.
