The funeral service for long time Wadena resident Luella Schlichting will be held Saturday, October 25, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Wadena, presided by her son-in-law, the Reverend Joel Brandvold. Interment will be in the Wadena Cemetery next to her husband and daughters. Visitation will precede the service at 9 a.m.
Luella Mae Schlichting was born to Harry and Bertha Scofield on December 6, 1940, in Sebeka, MN. She was a graduate of Bertha-Hewitt High School. Luella was joined in marriage to Gordon Schlichting in 1958. Gordon and Lu resided in Wadena, MN, for their entire marriage of 49 years. The union produced three children: Kriste Kay in 1959, Kerry Lynn in 1961, and Gordon John II in 1968.
Lu was a devoted wife and mother her entire life. She was known as an excellent cook and baker, and was a talented seamstress. She made a home for her family filled with home-cooked meals, frozen and canned vegetables, canned fruit, jams and jellies, pickles and fresh baked goods. She handcrafted much of her own clothing as well as her children's as they grew up.
She was a 4-H club leader and she and her husband were the Wadena County 4-H Dog Project Leaders for over 30 years. Lu supported her children in scouting, church youth groups and school activities, especially band and choir.
In her leisure time she enjoyed cross stitch and quilting, beyond her sewing. She prided herself in crafting gifts for friends and family. She also enjoyed family hunting and fishing trips, especially to Ontario, Canada and South Dakota. She was active in the Rice Creek Hunting Dog Club.
She was proud to be a grandmother to three fine young men and great grandmother to four.
Luella was preceded in death by her parents, husband and daughters. In 2015, she relocated to Cold Spring, MN to live near her son and daughter-in-law. She continued to bake, cross stitch and quilt, and enjoyed the company of her loyal Golden Retriever Gracie.
Luella entered the Assumption Home in Cold Spring in June of 2025, where she received wonderful care from the staff as well as the staff of St Croix Hospice.
Luella suddenly succumbed to congestive heart failure on October 15, 2025.
She is survived by her son Gordon (Marlene), grandsons Brent (Jessica) Martin, Philip (Bethany) Brandvold, and Jason Brandvold, brother Allen Scofield, nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren and cousins.
Arrangements are with the Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring, MN. (www.wennerfuneralhome.com)
