Luis "Papa" G. Merino, a beloved husband, father, and friend, peacefully departed this life on the 31st of October 2025 (All Hallows' Eve), surrounded by love and prayer in the embrace of his cherished family and friends. Born on January 11, 1954, Luis lived a life rich in faith, kindness, and devotion, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.
A pillar of quiet strength and compassion, Papa dedicated his life to serving others, both in his community and within his family. He raised a big (extended) family: he nourished and treated the family of his wife like his own - being a father to them. He dedicated a large part of his life to working as a Bowling Manager in Brunei Darussalam and was known to all for being a loving and supportive friend to those in his community who needed help. His love and support for his friends gained him the paternal trust and friendship of all those he met. His unwavering faith guided him through the trials and joys alike, and his love for God was evident in every action he took. As a husband to Carmelita Merino, their friendship was a beautiful testament to unchanging love and commitment, marked by shared laughter and a united faith.
Luis found immense joy and pride in being a father to his beloved son, Fr. JC Merino. Their bond, rooted in faith and mutual admiration, brought Luis great comfort and fulfillment, particularly as they shared the sacred moments of life.
Leading up to the final days of his earthly life, Luis was given the gift to journey through by spending moments of quiet healing and reconciliation with his sisters and brothers from the Philippines, Hawaii, and California.
In his final days, Luis was accompanied by his son, his sister-in-law Marivic (who is like a daughter to Luis), and a group of close friends. Their presence brought him comfort, offering support, prayers, and shared memories, creating an atmosphere that was both poignant and serene.
With a heart full of love and peace, Luis answered the call to return home to God, comforted by the knowledge that he left behind a legacy of faith, love, and kindness.
Luis G. Merino lived a full and faith-filled life, embracing every moment with grace, joy, and gratitude. As we gather to honor his memory, let us celebrate the gift of his life, the powerful lessons he imparted, and the love he so freely shared with everyone. He is now reunited with God, basking in everlasting peace, and waiting to welcome us all to our eternal home.
He will be deeply missed but his spirit will forever remain in our hearts. We take solace in knowing that he is finally home, wrapped in the arms of our Lord.
A Funeral Mass will be held on November 8, Saturday, at the Church of the Little Flower, where friends and family are invited to come together and celebrate the remarkable life of Papa.
