Lula Brown Brooks, 94, passed away on July 15, 2025. Lula was born in Hillsborough, NC, on September 12, 1930. She was the daughter of the late James Floyd Brown and the late Nellie Mariah Brown. She was married to the late Edward Reese Brooks, Jr.

Lula retired from AT&T in 1991. She was a long-time member of Winterville First Baptist Church and taught Sunday School for many years. Lula loved to sing. At four years old, she traveled with her father to revivals throughout the Carolinas and Alabama singing gospel songs. Lula loved word puzzles of all kinds and was an avid reader.

In addition to her parents and husband, Lula was preceded in death by her brother, James Floyd Brown, and her six sisters, Inez Johnson, Kathleen Jones, Mae Brown, Loretta Ashley, Bessie Collins and Tessie Irby. She is survived by her children, Edward Reese Brooks, III (Kathy), Pamela Brooks Evans, and Floyd Thomas Brooks (Rebecca). Her grandchildren, Brad Brooks (Katie), Lesley Hightower (Justin) and Ashley Meyer (Joe). Her step-grandchildren Robert Evans (Stephanie), Tara Cords (Doug), Savannah Evans (Patrick) and Beau Evans (Elyse). Her great-grandchildren, Reese, Ellie, Hattie and Will Brooks, Nolan Robinson, and Hayden and Logan Meyer. Her step-great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Alexandria, Robbie and Killian Evans, Lily, Lucas and Bennett Cords.

The family would like to express their gratitude for the kindness and superb treatment extended to Lula by the personnel of St. Mary’s Hospice.

Visitation will be on Friday, July 18, 2025, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, EAST, Athens. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Lord and Stephens EAST. Interment will follow at the Clark Cemetery in Lexington, Georgia.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winterville First Baptist Church.
