Lula Faye Deneau, age 88, of Spring City, Tennessee, passed away unexpectedly on January 8, 2026, at Rhea Medical Center.
Lula was born on September 9, 1937, to her late parents, Wesley Matlock and Frances Belcher.
Known by many as a true spitfire, Lula lived life on her own terms. She loved her morning coffee and playing bingo, and she found joy in fishing, planting flowers, gardening, and spending time outdoors. In quieter moments, she enjoyed crocheting, quilting, and baking-skills she lovingly shared with family over the years.
Earlier in her adult life, Lula was part-owner of a body shop before later dedicating herself to caring for others as a private caregiver in her community, a role she carried out with compassion and heart.
Lula was preceded in death by her parents; her children, Billy Brown and Jackie Bartlett; her step-children, Mitchell Brown and Annette Shaner; her siblings, Kathy Salo, LC Hatfield, Sammy Hatfield, JC Hatfield, and Rosella Davis; and her former spouse and the father of her children, Joseph Brown.
She is survived by her children, Velmia Hickman, Laquita (Michael) Brewster, Johnny (Roberta) Brown, Wesley Sober, David (Cindy) LaDue, and Goldie (Brackett) Woods; along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, as well as extended family members and dear friends.
In the later years of her life, Lula found great comfort and joy in her four-legged fur babies, who brought her constant companionship.
The family extends special thanks and heartfelt appreciation to A Plus Home Health Care, especially Lula's primary CNA, Nikki Lashomb, for her exceptional care and kindness.
At this time, no formal services are planned. The family will host a private gathering to celebrate Lula's life in the spring.
Companion Funeral Home of Athens and the Cody family are honored to assist the family during this time. Those wishing to leave condolences or share memories may do so by visiting Lula's online memorial page at www.companionfunerals.com.
