Luther Malcolm Obituary
Luther Augustus Malcolm ("Uncle John"), d.o.b. January 3, 1932, peacefully passed away in his sleep on August 21, 2025. The universe has received a generous, humorous, and wonderful new soul.
Uncle John was born in the small seaside village of Little Bay (Brighton) in the Parish of Westmoreland, Jamaica. He was the son of Edith ("Miss Bess," nee Campbell) and Charles Malcolm. Uncle John had a total of twelve siblings, all of whom he remembered and loved fondly. They all predeceased him except one brother, Dick Malcolm, who currently resides in Jamaica.
In 1957, at the age of 25, Uncle John moved to London, England to join two brothers already living and thriving there. They were part of the Windrush Generation, who helped to rebuild the United Kingdom after the devastation of World War II. Later, he would share his fond memories of living in swinging 1960s London, pub life and the growing West Indian community in the Stoke Newington section of London.
In 1978, he visited his older brother, Morty, in Bloomfield, Conn. He enjoyed himself so much he decided to return and eventually emigrated to the US, joining Morty and his family in 1979. He settled in the greater Hartford area, eventually becoming a naturalized US citizen. Uncle John made a good life for himself working as a machinist at Colt's Firearms, alongside his brother. Later, he worked for the Ramanda Inn, retiring from there. Having no biological children, Uncle John became a second father to Morty's five children, who grew to love and respect him. He was generous with his time, attention, and resources.
Uncle John was a devout Roman Catholic, becoming a communicant of St. Michael's Roman Catholic Parish in the Northend of Hartford. He also loved to travel, especially with family.
We will miss Uncle John and believe he is reunited with his brother and brother's wife, Irma, somewhere in the galaxy of the stars.
Uncle John leaves to cherish his memory a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, extended family and friends from Jamaica, England and the US. Later in life, unable to travel due to advanced age, he nonetheless enjoyed staying in touch with family and friends by telephone.
The Malcolm family especially expresses gratitude to the staff, nurses and aides from Woodside Village (Bloomfield), Welles Country Village (Vernon), and Avery Heights (Hartford), for the excellent, professional, and devoted care provided to Uncle John in his final years.
