Obituary published on Legacy.com by Mealey Funeral Home - Limestone Road on Jan. 30, 2026.
It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that our beloved mother Lydia Marie (Whipple) Wooters, age 89 of
Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully in her home on January 23, 2026. She is finally reunited with her husband of 48 years, Edwin W. Wooters, Jr. (Sonny), and her beloved son Paul A. B. Wooters. Lydia was born to the late Paul E. and Margaret E. (Jenks) Whipple, on September 8, 1936, in
Birmingham, Alabama.
Lydia was a devoted loving wife, mother and grandmother. Family was the center of Lydia's life. She was not only a homemaker and loving mother, but she would always claim to be a detective, lawyer, spy and doctor. In her words, she babysat the whole neighborhood of Glenville and her grandchildren. If you were one of those children of Glenville, you will remember her caring for you. Later, after everyone grew up, she worked at Hillside House nursing home for a few years. She worked in housekeeping at Hillside House and would visit the residents and show them someone cared for them. She also would go door to door with her children in tow selling Avon.
She enjoyed gardening. She and dad would always plant a vegetable garden in the back yard. She loved planting and growing flowers. She was quite good at drawing freehand. She loved to bake and cook and was known as "Chef Lydia". She watched every chef's cooking program on TV and created her own version of their recipes. She loved to take photographs and text. Every day we could expect a picture of her breakfast, lunch or dinner in our text messages. She was interested in history and would read and watch all types of historical and political events on television. She was quite the historian and documented our ancestry. Proudly she would speak of our ancestor, William Whipple from New Hamshire, who signed the Declaration of Independence. She kept notes on everything (names, dates, times, places). She never forgot anything. She would take pictures of current and historical events that were televised and take notes. She loved listening to music and would write down the lyrics from songs that meant something to her; one example, "Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries, don't take it serious, it's to mysterious, you work, you save, you worry so, but you can't take your dough when you go, go, go"! She left that in plain sight for us to see.
She passed the time playing sudoku, mahjong, and puzzles. She and Mona were in competition with each other on Panda Pop. They were part of the General Hospital family, and each day they would watch it together either in person, text or on the phone. They would discuss what was going on in that family like they were part of it. Any kind of breaking news that interrupted programming would result in a few choice words from mom. Alabama was her college team that she liked to watch. She loved watching football with her son Paul.
Our mother was an angel on earth. She would help anyone who needed it. She and our dad were devoted to their children and would be there in every situation through the good or the bad. Regardless of the situation, she always gave from her heart. She was the Rock of our family. Her children loved her dearly. As she aged and needed help, she could depend on each of her children, which she appreciated. Her laugh was contagious and the light and love in her heart shown through her eyes. Our hearts are broken; our dear mother will never be forgotten and lives in each of our hearts. She is the wind beneath our wings, and the light that will always shine in the darkness.
In addition to her parents, Lydia is preceded in death by her loving husband Edwin W. Wooters, Jr. (Sonny) and son Paul A. B. Wooters. She is survived by her children Edwin W. Wooters III (Tracy), Deborah S. Wooters, Mona C. Alexander (Wayne) and Jeffery A. Wooters (Monique); and 5 grandchildren Edwin Wooters IV (Tara), Amanda Wooters (Paul), Aaron Alexander, Alyssa Alexander (Cody), and Margaret Wooters (Mickey) and 7 great grandchildren.

Wilmington, DE 19808, where friends may visit after 10:30A.M. services to begin at 11:30A.M. Final resting place will be at All Saints Cemetery.
