Lyle George Ryon of Lime Springs passed away on January 18, 2025 at the age of 85 at Regional Health Services of Howard County after a brief illness.
Lyle was born on June 30, 1939 in Laurens, Iowa on the family farm to Christena (Egertsen) and George Ryon. He attended Laurens Community Schools until the family moved to Lime Springs, Iowa in 1957. Lyle graduated from Lime Springs High School in 1958.
After graduating high school, Lyle worked as a mechanic for various area businesses before being drafted into the Army in 1962. During his time in the military, he was stationed in Alaska where he worked as a mechanic and wrecker truck driver. Upon being honorably discharged in 1964, Lyle returned to Lime Springs to start his own business, Ryon's Garage. The business was started in a two car garage across the street from its current location. His brother, Jay, joined the business as a partner three years later. At this time, they constructed a new shop at the current location. Over the years, the shop became the daily meeting place where many problems were solved and friendships were formed over coffee and treats. Lyle worked side by side with his brother in the business up until the time of his death.
Lyle was a gifted mechanic, welder, and fabricator. There wasn't much he couldn't fix. During his time at Ryon's Garage, he fabricated many innovative solutions for the business's customers and even worked alongside his brother to build a miniature operational hook and ladder fire truck they enjoyed entering in parades. Lyle loved finding and refurbishing antique tractors. He took great pride in showing off and talking about his tractors at tractor shows.
Lyle was an active member of the Lime Springs community. He served on the Lime Springs Fire Department for over thirty years. He was a member of the Lime Springs Community Club and helped with the Lime Springs Sweet Corn Days for many, many years.
Lyle is survived by his sister, Mary (Ryon) Stevenson and brother, Jay Ryon, both of Lime Springs, Iowa. He is also survived by his nephews and nieces, Todd (Dawn) Stevenson of LeRoy, MN, Matthew (Erin) Stevenson of Lime Springs, IA, and Christena (Brent) Bowers of Platteville, WI, and his great nieces and nephew, Laura Stevenson of Ridgeway, Iowa, and Isabel and Nick Bowers of Platteville, WI.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, Isabel "Belle" Ryon, brother-in-law, Lyle Stevenson and infant twin nieces.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, February 8, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Lime Springs Community Center. A private family burial will take place at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs, Iowa at a later date.
