Lyle LeRoy Steward, age 86 of Appleton, died Sunday August 21, 2022 at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center, Appleton after a short illness. He was born May 23, 1936 in Shiocton, WI, the son of the late Raymond and Laura (Winterfeldt) Steward. Lyle graduated from Appleton Senior High School (Appleton West) in 1954 and joined the U.S. Navy in July of 1954. He completed his basic training at U.S. Naval Base, Great Lakes, IL. We was then ordered to duty aboard the USS MIDWAY (CVA 41) out of Norfolk, VA in October 1954 and got under way for a cruise around the world. During the cruise he visited ports in Florida; Cape Town, South Africa; Colombo Ceylon, India; Manila, Philippines Islands; Hong Kong, China; Yokosuka, Japan; Honolulu, Hawaii; San Francisco, Alameda and San Diego, California; Seattle and Bremerton, Washington. Lyle received an award from Neptunus Rex and Davey Jones for successfully crossing the equator during the world cruise around the world aboard the USS MIDWAY CVA 41 on the 6th of January 1955. He served on-board numerous ships during active duty assignments; USS MIDWAY CVA 41, USS WASP, USS MANATEE AO 58, USS YORKTOWN CVS 10, USS TARGETEER YV3 (the smallest aircraft carrier in the world), and the USS PURDY DD 734- 1970-1973, his last duty at sea. His assignments were to assist in supervising the handling of enlisted and officer personal records and administrative duties on all the different ships he served aboard.
Between serving aboard ships Lyle also served at various shore based Naval facilities overseas and within the United States: The Pentagon, Washington D.C.; Yeoman A School, San Diego, California; U.S. Naval Justice School, Newport, Rhode Island; The Supreme Allied Command Atlantic (SACLANT) Norfolk, Virginia, U.S. NAF, Kenitra, Morocco, North Africa (during his duties as the bowling lane manager at NAF Kenitra, Lyle satisfactorily completed the AMF Technical Services GMBH Bowling Management School of Instruction at Wiesbaden, Germany). Medals and awards received: Good Conduct, China Service, National Defense and Armed Forces Expeditionary. Certificate of Recognition was received during the period of the Cold War (2 September 1945- 26 December 1991). Lyle retired from the U.S. Navy on July 16, 1973 and transferred to the U.S. Naval Fleet Reserve to return to civilian life here in Wisconsin. He was officially retired from the armed forces of the United States of America on the 1st day of December, 1983.
Lyle married Gladys Irene Sunnes, June 8, 1957, on a beautiful sunny day at Trinity English Lutheran Church of Appleton and had referred to her as his Bride ever since. They moved to Shiocton with his Bride and four children after his retirement from the U.W. Navy July of 1973. Lyle attended Fox Valley Technical Institute and received his Associate s Degree in Printing and Publishing on January 19, 1978. He went to work for the New London Press, New London, WI and various print shops in the area. He worked at The Bulletin, Appleton, as a darkroom technician and Press Operator until November, 1987.
His family moved to Neillsville, WI to retire, bur he worked at The Clark County Press/Shopper Newspaper as a darkroom technician, and continued working after they moved to Greenwood, WI in March 1998 until February 2007, then moved back to Appleton to continue his retirement (full time) with his Bride Gladys. They were on their own for the remainder of their retirement years.
Lyle is survived by his bride, Gladys, children; Kathy A. (Kenneth) Pluger, Shiocton, Tony R. (Anna Menting) Steward, Kaukauna, Todd W. (Barbara Staniak) Steward, Neillsville and Ty R. Steward, Neenah, eight grandchildren; Anna Pluger, Sarah (Chris) Prelesnik, Autumn (Christopher) O Connell, Christopher (Ashley) Steward, Todd Steward Jr., Sean (Brianna) Steward, Myles Steward and Logan Steward, six great grandchildren; Brian, Joe, Eli, Chase, Natalie, Marie and Liam. He is further survived by his sisters; Eloise Thede, Audrey Thede and Diane Barrett, as well as several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death are his parents, three brothers; Douglas, Ronald and Rodger Steward, one sister, Elsa Schultz, and grandson, Eric Norman Pluger.
Lyle enjoyed participating in outdoor/indoor activities; fishing, hunting, horseshoes, taking pictures and movies of outdoors, family reunions, mother nature s creations, leather craft, bowling, woodcraft s and personal computer. Woodworking was a real joy of accomplishment and satisfaction, in particular, handcrafting logging chains and pouting chairs for the grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 26, 2022 from 9:00am until 11:00am at Valley Funeral Home, 2211 N. Richmond St., Appleton with a service to follow at 11:00am, Military Honors will then follow the service at the funeral home.
