Melvin Lynn Wylie, of Albany, died Thursday, May 17, 2012. His Memorial Service will be held 11 AM, Monday, May 21, 2012 at Porterfield United Methodist Church with Rev. Leigh Ann Raynor and Rev. William Collins officiating. Visitation will be held 4 to 6 PM, Sunday, May 20, 2012 at Kimbrell Stern Funeral Home Born October 2, 1936 in Rosemark, TN, to the late Melvin and Wilna Dunavant Wylie, Lynn graduated from University of Tennessee where he received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Agricultural Engineering. He was a member and officer of FarmHouse Fraternity there and remained an avid UT fan throughout his adult life. After college graduation, Lynn served in the US Army as a helicopter pilot, most notably flying the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea in 1962. Lynn and his wife, Kay, moved to Albany in 1966, where Lynn worked as an engineer at Lilliston Corporation. He served as Vice-President of Engineering until the plant closed in 1986, then continued his engineering career as a contract engineer with Technical Associates after that time. Known for his engineering knowledge and expertise in designing farm equipment at both Butler Manufacturing and Lilliston Corp., he also shared this knowledge with other engineers through his leadership in the American Society of Agricultural Engineers, Farm and Industrial Equipment Institute, and the American Society for Testing and Materials. Lynn was active in the Exchange Club of Albany serving in leadership roles as President, Vice-President and Treasurer over the years. He was selected as Mr. Exchange in 1970, and also served on the Board of Directors of the Exchange Club Fair of Southwest GA. He was actively involved with Boy Scout Troop 111 and helped build several Habitat for Humanity homes. Lynn and Kay joined Porterfield United Methodist Church in 1966 when moving to Albany, and over the years Lynn served in leadership roles as Chairman of the Board and Chairman of Board of Trustees as well as working with Porterfield's youth groups. Lynn's greatest pleasure was spending time with family and friends and he was passionate about his love of nature, especially enjoying time in the mountains, camping and hiking. Survivors include Kay, his wife of fifty years; one daughter, Sherri Wylie and her husband, Sam Hardin of Roswell, GA; two sons, Roger Wylie and his wife, Daiva Tautvydas, of Seattle, WA, and Cliff Wylie and his wife, Neema Amatya, of Kirkland, WA. He is survived by five grandchildren, Beth Wylie-Hardin, Zach Wylie-Hardin, Asta Wylie, Aidan Wylie, Ryn Wylie; step-grandson, Sam Hardin, IV; his sister and brother-in-law, Wilna and Dick Lovett of Beaufort, SC, and sister-in-law and husband, Martha Jo and David Owen of Eads, TN; three nieces and one nephew. Lynn was preceded in death by his parents, Wilna and Melvin Wylie, his brother, Don Wylie and sister, Karen Wylie. If desired, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Porterfield United Methodist Church, 2200 Dawson Road, Albany, GA, 31707 or Albany Community Hospice, 320 Foundation Drive, Albany, GA, 31707.
