Obituary published on Legacy.com by Frederick Funeral Home on Dec. 2, 2025.
It is with both sadness and gratitude that we celebrate the life of M. David Hils, who peacefully passed away on November 28, 2025, just two days shy of his 95th birthday. A loving husband, devoted father, and cherished grandfather, Dave lived a life filled with faith, love, passion, and a strong sense of family.
Born on November 30, 1930, in Bellevue, Kentucky, Dave was a man who valued education, earning his Master's Degree while embarking on a successful career in teaching, coaching and insurance sales. He was a dedicated servant of his community and an exemplary member of the United States Army, serving proudly during his time in the military.
David was a devoted husband to his beloved wife of 71 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Hils (nee Oberle). He was the cherished father of late Matthew (Gloria) Hils and late Mary Louise Hils, and the proud father to Kathleen (Andrew) Rechel, David (Mary) Hils, Sandra (Paul) Maffey, Linda (Jeff) Ratterman, and Beth (Michael) Noe. His legacy continues through his grandchildren Shawn, Amanda, Angela (Kevin), Ben (Olivia), Dave Jr. (Nicole), Joe (Ali), Maria (Matthew), Eric (Danielle), Anna (Andy), Grace, Adam (Carly), Rebecca (Ben), Nick (Katie), Cara (Jake), Katherine, Abby, Claire, and Brian, as well as his great-grandchildren Luke, McKenna, Addy, Judah, Mae, Emme, Izzy, Makayla, Ellie, Quinn, and two more on the way.
David was born into a family that valued love and service. He was the last surviving sibling of Joyce Blanchet and was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters: Ellen May Goeke, Flora Schnorbus, Fr. Henry Hils, Clement Hils, Ann Welch, Jude Hils, Joan Schulte, Mote Hils, and Mary Rose Hils. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who will miss his gentle spirit and rich stories.
His passion for athletics shone brightly as he coached and taught at St. Xavier High School and Elder High School, and he served as the Athletic Director at St. Xavier High School, where he inspired countless young people with his belief in hard work and perseverance. A natural athlete, David's warmth, faithfulness, and love for landscaping brought beauty to both his yard and the lives he touched. Everyone appreciated his intelligence and wit. He supported St James parish in White Oak for many years, serving on Parish Council, and volunteering when needed.
Family and friends are invited to join together in remembering a remarkable life. A visitation will be held on December 5, 2025, at Frederick Funeral Home, 2553 Banning Road from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will take place on December 6, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 5361 Dry Ridge Road.
