M. Larry May, 83, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 3, 2026 in
Hobart, Wisconsin.
Larry was born on August 18, 1942 in
Gary, Indiana to the late R. Milton May, M.D. and Margaret (Birkhold) May. He attended Horace Mann High School in
Gary, Indiana, and Indiana State University, where he studied art and vocational education and earned a master's degree.
On December 28, 1965 he married Elisabeth "Betty" Brennan. Larry and Betty were high school sweethearts. For 60 years they were an example of unconditional love, commitment and teamwork. Larry was a devoted father who cherished his children, their spouses, and his grandchildren.
Larry and Betty moved to Green Bay on the advice of a favorite uncle, who insisted "Wisconsin is beautiful." They have lived in the area ever since. Larry remodeled a home that sits in a heavily wooded area. He was an avid home landscaper and appreciated outdoor beauty and wildlife.
Larry taught technical education at Bay Port High School for 35 years until his retirement in 2000. He was an accomplished carpenter, welder, metal worker and mechanic, and taught those skills to countless students. Larry enjoyed being an extracurricular advisor at Bay Port, where he mentored students through projects outside of school hours – the 10-ft steel-and-timber anchor on Lineville Road is one. Larry had a special affinity for cars, having rebuilt a '34 Ford street rod and a '47 Jeep. His family is grateful to be surrounded by so many beautiful items in which his art background was evident.
Larry owned a tool for everything, and never encountered a problem he couldn't solve in one of several ways. He was organized, hard working, thoughtful, and quietly did things for others. Larry had the most beautiful handwriting you've ever seen, printed or script.
For the last 12 years of his life, Larry fought Parkinson's Disease. His family extends sincere gratitude to the St Croix Hospice and Emerald Bay Memory Care staff for their compassionate care.
Larry is survived by his devoted wife: Betty May; children: Michael (Heidi) May, and Barbara (JD) Purvis; three grandchildren: David, Noelle, and Nate May; two brothers: Charles May, M.D. and Glend (Sandra) May; and one sister: Peggy (John) Dimpfel. Larry will be greatly missed by those who loved him, and remembered fondly for the difference he made in our lives.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date to celebrate Larry's life. Burial will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Allouez.
