Mabel R. Ciancio Olivas Gonzales Wilson, more affectionately known as Gramma Mae, passed away Thanksgiving evening. She lived a long, wonderful life of 92 years.
Gramma Mae was born on April 22, 1933 in
Salida, Colorado, to Mollie Archuletta Mansker and Fred Ciancio. A graduate of Canon City, Colorado, Class of 1952 she spent most of her life living in Florence and Pueblo dedicated to raising her 5 surviving children and spending time with her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. Preceded in death by both parents, son Joey Gonzales, brother Fred Olivias, sister, Charlotte Schramm, best friend, Nellie Suarez, and father of her children Jose Gonzales.
Through the years, Gramma Mae enjoyed going to the movies and rides in the car, mostly to Florence and Canon City. She would share memories of her past along the way, snacking on popcorn and listening to old gospel hymns. Some of her fondest memories were hanging out with her best friend Nellie and making tamales. They would make so many dozens of tamales, she would have nightmares tamales were chasing her. She enjoyed reading, listening to Freddy Fender, fixing puzzles (minus the sky part), and watching her favorite soap operas and channel the Lifetime Movie Network. She had many skills of which she loved sharing her knowledge with her children and grandchildren. She taught them how to sew, make tamales, roll a perfectly circular tortilla, and how to make her famous homemade rolls (the very ones that were fought over every year at Thanksgiving dinner). In her later years, she resided at Pueblo Villa where she made many friends. She spent her days playing Bingo, making jewelry, and playing cards, visited often by her family.
Gramma Mae was a woman of faith, strong willed, and ornery. Her smile lit up the room and her laugh was contagious. She was much loved by her family and friends who will never forget her love for popcorn, RC Cola, Big Hunks, Daisies, Freddy Fender, and Christmas lights. She will be deeply missed.
